  • That reminds me of that peanut butter, professor nutz. They claim that due to adding certain fibers to their peanut butter, it reduces the digested calories from around 200 calories to 36 calories. They took a concept that exists, fiber-fat bonding, and an in house pilot study of 6 people over 2 weeks, and use that to market this as some kind of miracle peanut butter. Is it technically possible that somebody eating that peanut butter only digests 36 calories per serving? Yes, but it’s (to me) very unlikely and changes person to person (which they admit).

  • Maybe my sources aren’t great, I use kagi nowadays over Google and they have an academic filter (like Google scholar). That’s all I used to find the few things I linked.

It’s well established that your fat cell count is relatively stable as an adult and that as you gain significant weight that your body creates more fat cells to store this energy. It’s known that the number of cells stay relatively stable even after losing weight, they just shrink. It’s also known that leptin, or lack there of, affects your hunger. These things specifically are well documented. Other points of what I shared, and the overall impact may be, still hypothetical.

I’m not going to keep looking for and reading articles because I’m not finding what you’re looking for and that’s all good. I don’t want to act like I’m an expert, I’m just a nerd reading things on the internet.

That’s not to say, though, that this fat cell count is the end all be all and it’s impossible to lose weight because you’ve already gained too much — your own situation is proof of that. It’s just added context, not a barrier. Highly satiating foods like what you’ve mentioned, grapes over ice cream, eggs oats and yogurt over donuts, these make a much bigger impact on your overall hunger. I feel it too, I’m overweight and working on losing it, and if i snack on something like chips, it almost feels like it does nothing for me. That’s why all the weight loss advice mentions high protein and High fiber foods.

In adults, fat cell number is constant over time in spite of a large turnover (about 10% of the fat cells per year) when body weight is stable. A decrease in body weight only changes fat cell size (becoming smaller), whereas an increase in body weight causes elevation of both fat cell size and number in adults.

    https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4371661/

This one’s not as easy for me to quote.

Basically the gist of the whole idea is that your body maintains the level of fat cells pretty steadily as an adult. When you gain or lose weight the cells just grow or shrink, but they can only grow so big before you need new cells to store more energy and your body will build them. Each of the fat cells have a part to play in signaling that you’re in a deficit and need to consume more calories (when we didn’t have such calorie dense foods readily available this was probably correct most of the time). So, if you have 2 or 3 times the number of fat cells then you “should” that’s increasing the signaling you receive to eat, making it harder not to (simplifying that a lot). In normal maintenance, your body still maintains that turnover pretty steadily so it generally doesn’t go away.

  • He tends to be condescending, toxic, and dishonest. I happened to watch this video the other day that covers a fair bit of stuff including the stop killing games petitions, if you’ve got 20 minutes.

    https://youtube.com/watch?v=R-RaQZPzhqU

    Things like

    • completely misrepresenting the stop killing games initiative.
    • bitching for quite a while that “someone” pulled a mob during a world of warcraft raid causing a wipe, going back to see who it was to remove them, seeing it was himself and then justifying why it was now the right call.
    • running away from his group in world of warcraft in a fight claiming he has no mana, while he’s wasting moves to drain the last of his mana and he has ways of getting around half of it back. This was during some kind of creater guild thing where if you die you lose your character. So abandoning his team to save himself and lying about it.
    • banning/blocking everyone who criticizes or corrects him on these things
    • DMCA’d and threatened legal action on an indie dev for a parody game that included him as a cockroach.

  • allowing Nazis and other right-wingers to fester in his community

Would you mind elaborating on that? Is it that these people are in his YouTube comments, maybe on a subreddit? I never followed this guy, I’ve only seen probably less than 5 videos he’s made (likely only 2), one of which was this open source video.

Originally I avoided the guy because he was just a “loud is funny” let’s player, then I heard he said the N word, and i had heard people trying to get him to be the #1 YouTube channel over some music conglomerate.

In any case, while you can do things to attract certain people, I’m not sure how much control you have over your community, which is why I’m asking.

  • They probably think they are getting the truth so they don’t think they need to look any further into it.

I have seen enough that I know I don’t like and I don’t agree in general with JD Vance, for instance, so I’m not going out to find redeeming qualities about him. I’m also not really watching things from him or trump for that matter. But, my brother who ended up going the opposite way of me politically, said the other day that Vance is “down to earth” and will likely go for president after trump. I see clips all the time of him speaking that show me he’s not down to earth, but I’m also not seeing clips of him tailored to show me that it is true.

I can imagine that if you’re only being fed the positive narratives of your side and only negative things about the “other” side you’re likely to think you already know what’s going on. We also know that both media and the almighty algorithms (like YouTube) will send you down these rabbit holes in the interest of views. If i don’t search, most of what I get about Vance from algorithm based social media are the memes with his distorted face. If that’s all you see, you’re probably coming away with the impression that this guy is a joke. So if you tell me he’s competent and down to earth, my initial reaction is that’s nonsense. Is he? Maybe. It’s not what I see and I’ve felt no need to look for it.

I have always been a nerd on the internet, so i have always been on these kinds of sites like Lemmy, reddit, imgur, old forums, where I can talk to people from all over the world. They have their echo chambers and little bubbles but it’s still a more diverse group of opinions than what you’re fed on sites like Facebook. But the usage on these sites is much lower, most people are not here. They’re either not using social media at all, or they’re on Facebook, tiktok, whatever. They’re only seeing the cropped images, edited clips, news that caters to what they want to believe. If everything’s telling you one thing, including things your friends and family are sharing online, why would you question it.
