? developer can write 50 lines per day, LLM help us for some auto-complete or some easy 5 lines routine/functions, but we are not blind and do not accept them blindly without understanding them. And we have pull request and reviews etc and prior to this we have architecture and class diagram and SDD and acceptance criteria and all kinds of things.
You do think that in big companies a developer will use LLM to generate thousands of line per day by himself?
I’m not a kid doing some vibe coding, of course I know what I want and basically know how to implement it, the AI is just helping me writing it, auto-complete and all.
I’m a software developer since the 90s, basically before the internet, we had some C books for reference and that’s it. I can tell you that I started last year to use copilot in vscode and some chatgpt on a web page, and it basically changed my world, and all my 50+ years old coworkers are amazed by what it can do really.
You are right it will not fade at all in software development.
Meta makes billions with it, so why would they block them?
Well, I’m old and lived in before “before” and well it was ugly… I prefer the “now” now.
About the same, I have an old netbook HP Mini 311 with an Atom 270 or something, it came with 1GB of RAM and winXP, I installed another 2GB to have 3GB, worked fine, then installed MX Linux with Xfce, even the nvidia GPU was working fine in it.
For fun I tried to install win10Pro, it worked!!! was basically unusable, but it booted to the desktop.
I was checking a Dell laptop, going from 32GB to 64GB is a $1700 option, WTF :-(
In Linux I use code for coding, and nano for everything else
I started using un*x on mainframe (aix, irix, hpux, etc). On a regular PC you could have SVR4, BSD, Minix, things like this, then linux came, in the 90s we had no CD, we downloaded the floppies images from ftp on the university server, then rushed to home to install linux on a 486, we did a lot of compile ourselves, no choice back in time. I used some distro after, like Mandrake (I’m French) but always liked the DIY thing, but it was more and more complicated and long… this is why I started using Debian in the days…

I started with like, nothing, linux 0.99 on 8 floppies and X11 on like 12 floppies… then some kind of LFS, then Debian, then Ubuntu, then Mint, then MX with Xfce (since almost 10 years)
Yup, it’s common on chinese phone/tablet where they advertised things with 16GB of ram while it’s 8+8. First thing I disabled on my first phone that supported this fake RAM. This would be slow and kill your flash.
In software coding I must say copilot in vscode is pretty impressive and very useful

Of course, this is why I’m using MX Linux, it’s Debian based. systemd optional, no snap, no flatpak, stable.
