My town had an extremely generically named “spa” that I passed by all the time and joked that it must be a drug ring and I found out that no actually they were a human trafficking ring and they got shut down by the police.

This is sort of like the depreciation tax benefit for private jets from the Trump tax cuts. I get it, I do, I just don’t care for the government offering extra help for the types of people in this scenario. Let them manage with their billions.
OldWoodFrame@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•Another 122.88TB SSD just launched and this one comes from an obscure Chinese startup you've probably never encounteredEnglish15·3 months agoHaha OK op thinking it was a scam is not racist, calling it “a core value in their society” is a bit racist.

OldWoodFrame@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•Designed by men, for men: Why sex with robots does not have appeal among womenEnglish15·5 months agoI want to know what the state of the art AI sex robot is right now. Because they have those realistic-ish sex dolls, and some pretty advanced LLMs that can chat conversationally, and longer term memory is starting to get into the LLM repertoire so your bot can remember things about you and reference them later.
I feel like we’re 3-5 years away from a high end AI prostitute startup becoming huge.
My understanding is that anal and oral are “wrong” in the same way masturbation is, it’s spilling your seed outside of sex for procreation.
But like, clearly a tier better than premarital sex so…
OldWoodFrame@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•TikTok is offline in the U.S. after Supreme Court upholds banEnglish3·6 months agoPresident has the authority to declare it ok forever or at any time. Not a great law IMO.
OldWoodFrame@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•TikTok is offline in the U.S. after Supreme Court upholds banEnglish7·6 months agoNot yet but the law gives the president authority to determine whether the company is a national security threat once it meets all the qualifications in the law. So his “90 day extension” is legally him saying “actually they’re not a threat” for 90 days and then “actually they are a threat” after that.
OldWoodFrame@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•TikTok Plans ‘Immediate’ Shutdown of App in U.S. on Jan. 19 If Supreme Court Doesn’t Block Ban: ReportsEnglish9·6 months agoThey’re shutting down instead of blocking new downloads, seems like a stunt. But the blocking of new downloads is obviously happening if SCOTUS doesn’t step in…that’s the law. That’s just what the law says.
OldWoodFrame@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•TikTok reportedly plans ‘immediate’ Sunday shutdown in the US if it’s bannedEnglish24·6 months agoI know the technicality is that it will be voluntarily stopping service rather than just ending new downloads like the ban says.
But “app will shut down when banned” is almost comically anti-news.
OldWoodFrame@lemm.eeto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•In the US, is this actually the moment past the point of no return?352·8 months agoWe don’t know.
The US came back from a US president hiring private goons to spy on his political opponents.
The US came back from a US president illegally selling weapons to Iran to fund right wing militias in South America.
The US came back from a US cabinet member taking literal bribes from oil companies to give them oil drilling rights on federal land.
The US came back from a US president illegally firing a cabinet member and installing his own lackey.
But it didn’t HAVE to.
I don’t think there’s really such a thing as a ‘point of no return’ for a Democracy. But it is possible to get to a point after which you don’t return.
OldWoodFrame@lemm.eeto Political Weirdos @lemmy.world•Political Weirdo JD Vance (the one with the very thick eyeliner) got so scared he ran home and pointed a gun at the front door61·8 months agoIt’s honestly very funny to imagine any US Senator thinks of themselves in these action hero terms. Like Mitch McConnell heard about it and put on a bandana and got his lasso.
My big secret. I kill graphic design homework on purpose. I good designer. The best!
He’s doing what the Board wants, stock price is up. If there was a worker advocate on the board, maybe things would be different.
Ending grain requisitions and transitioning to prodnalog stimulates the economy thus Lenin is a right wing hack.
OldWoodFrame@lemm.eeto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that 1,300 children are still separated from their parents from the Trump era family separation policyEnglish5·9 months agoIt all works without it being a specific conspiracy to create terrorists so I don’t know why you added that part. Maybe he’s just a piece of shit who does bad stuff that creates cohorts of people who hate him and America because he doesn’t know about, think about, or care about them.
Did you know Angels in the Outfield has a 31% on rottentomatoes? I’m scared to watch it again because I remember it as a perfect movie.
