Yes, and we’re in denial about it.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•People assume that the secrets of the universe will be revealed to them in an afterlife, but you might just remain your same dumb self and have to spend eternity going to church.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do people in this day in age become nazis/neonazies sexist or even incels when there is so much knowledge against it? Do they get anything out of being that way?
7·1 year agoThe examined life with all its critical thinking and guarding against bias is hard. The dark side is easier.
Mostly I just remember the burns on my legs from the engine.
And then the motorcycle being broken and never getting fixed. I suspect my mom sabotaged it.
This is me and my dad. It isn’t, but it is.
I really wish you had asked a few years ago. Then perhaps I could have avoided this horrible mistake. But, oh well. 🤷♂️

19·2 years agoAnd I don’t mean to denigrate data science. It is important and powerful. And real machine intelligence may one day emerge from it (or data science may one day point the way). But data science just isn’t AI.

Technology@lemmy.world•Study Finds Consumers Are Actively Turned Off by Products That Use AIEnglish
411·2 years agoThis is because the AI of today is a shit sandwich that we’re being told is peanut butter and jelly.
For those who like to party: All the current “AI” technologies use statistics to approximate semantics. They can’t just be semantic, because we don’t know how meaning works or what gives rise to it. So the public is put off because they have an intuitive sense of the ruse.
As long as the mechanics of meaning remain a mystery, “AI” will be parlor tricks.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why doesn't the American market provide efficient and effective health insurance like it does for car insurance?
4·2 years agoNo one knows, but for sure the reason is something rotten. I’ve never ever heard a reasonable argument against it.
Simple really:
- A talking snake with legs convinced Eve, who was made from a rib, to eat a fruit that made her realize she was naked.
- ???
- Jesus had to be born of a woman, obviously.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Your new neighbor, a genie, opens 'Temptation Mart' next door. Food, alcohol, substances, carnal pleasures, gambling - all complimentary, 24/7. How does this affect your daily life?
1·2 years agoSo I take it that you interpret “no stupid questions” to mean “don’t post stupid questions.” The way I interpret it is “there’s no such thing as a stupid question.”
The sidebar says “No such thing. Ask away!” So I think the idea is that people should feel free to ask any question assuming they really want an answer. However, joke or troll questions (and I don’t think this is either one), are allowed on Fridays.
