Hello all, In a previous installation I was able to successfully use PlayOnLinux to run a few Windows apps. My most recent system, though, is not liking it. Currently on Kubuntu 24.04
WINE is present and up to date. However, when I tried to install PON from either Discover, or using APT, the app crashes immediately. I never even get to the GUI. I read on the page for the app in Discover, numerous others complain about this exact problem.
Anyone know about this and how to resolve it?
I included the link to the app’s website because there are numerous versions and it states you need to use the correct one. I don’t know what those different variables mean, so could someone please advise? (deb files, Cosmic, Trusty, Bionic, Xenial… etc. I don’t understand these).

Thank you to anyone who can assist.
Play on linux is extremely old at this point and isn’t really updated.
I understand that it was a tool that worked well for you in the past and you could probably get it working with the right dependencies but if I am being honest. It’s not worth it.
Wine has improved drastically in the last few years and with that a lot of new apps have come around.
My personal favorite is bottles as it is very easy to use and works well for both games and applications.
Another option is lutris but it’s a lot more oriented towards games than applications.
I hope I was of some help and good luck
Play on Linux has been succeeded by Lutris or Bottles. I’ve tried both and personally I have fewer issues with Lutris but Bottles UI is a lot more intuitive. So I’d suggest trying Bottles first and if you run into issues use Lutris.
I’ll give them both a good trial. I actually have had Lutris already for a while and used it a few times.
Thanks!
Do not use PlayOnLinux, it’s been dead for a long time. Use lutris/bottles instead
Yeah I think I’ve come to that realization. It really sucks that stuff gets abandoned so easily, why doesn’t someone pick it up and get it up to date?
Anyway thanks, I need to try moving away from it.
Those names refer to ubuntu versions. 24.04 is named noble numbat. Another easier option might be to install lutris from the app store and install and run windows software with it.
Seconded, PlayOnLinux is very old software. Lutris is better.
@AndrewZabar
I used PlayOnLinux for years.
Recently I migrated to Lutris. I have a Wine installation which are 15 Years old and Works fine on Lutris.
Thanks to Lutris and its modern Settings I could use modern technology for my 32bit games.Lutris seems to offer a lot of easy setups for games, but I want to use some windows apps from my own installation files, and it seems to be not very intuitive
