They turned into worse versions of what they used to make fun of.One entry, from November 11, talked about how some of the artists at Rockstar wanted to make a zombie survival game after finishing Vice City. The working title was “Z,” which Vermeij explains was “pronounced Zed, not Zee.” It was intended to use Vice City’s code, set on a “windswept foggy Scottish island,” where players would be under constant attack from the undead. The main focus for players would be acquiring fuel for vehicles, but after just a month of work, apparently the team just found it too depressing. They got to work on San Andreas instead.
Glad the article included some of the things they mentioned in their blog. It’s interesting to read.

I’m pretty sure they shot it down because “1) we can, 2) no fun allowed, 3) fuck you”. That seems to be their “corporate values” these days - or whatever the Suitspeak term is.

Seriously, it’s kinda pathetic trying to paint one of the few remaining decent AAA developers in a negative light for expecting their former employees to abide by agreements they willingly signed.
It’s stuff that happened 20 years ago.
Most NDAs stay in effect indefinitely, and I’m sure a secretive company like Rockstar has no time limit on theirs.
In the US, contracts are routinely deemed unenforcable by courts for being overly broad. A contract with an indefinite duration frequently falls under that category.
Perhaps that would happen if this went to court, but the fact remains that he (presumably) broke a contract he signed.
It’s a question of integrity. If I sign my name on a contract, I do my best to uphold that contract, and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect others to do the same.
The contract is forced on you in order to obtain employment when there is very unequal bargaining power. It’s also a contract that’s largely deemed illegal in actual courts. He disclosed information that is no longer business relevant and instead just an object of historical interest at this point.
I suppose if you were forced to sign a non-compete to work for a fast food restaurant that you’d also honor that and not work for any other fast food restaurants if you had to quit?
Ugh, I guess I have to include what I assumed would be obvious: “within reason.”
It’s unreasonable to sign a non-compete contract for a fast food job where no entity can be harmed by the employee moving to a different fast food company.
It’s perfectly reasonable to sign an NDA for a creative development job where sharing confidential information can seriously harm the company.

Except he wasn’t putting them in a negative light, he was just putting them in a human light, nothing was really negative. It was probably an emotional response from an OG’s ego over in Rockstar North, and egos being what they are, there was probably little in regards to being able to reconcile it after the complaints were made.

Seriously, though, I’m just fed up with the entitlement and hypocrisy of gamer culture. The rage directed at a kickass developer for expecting their contracts to be respected is just plain childish. Shit like this makes me ashamed to call myself a gamer.
Some people seem to think anything is fine if it’s for social media. An Apple genius was fired recently for making ‘I work at Apple ’ tech tip Tik Toks and she seemed totally baffled as to why that might be a problem.
Thats apples and oranges to this situation.
