I started out with dokuwiki but it unexpectedly stopped working. I caved and used the default wordpress. Wordpress isn’t actually popular, it’s just the default provided by most ISP.
I use Wordpress and it’s not that user friendly, but is achievable if you are willing to fiddle around with things. Different templates have different options, I spent a fair bit of time at the start just doing a rough sample and changing around various settings to figure out what they did. The biggest issues I had was using too many higher resolution photos at the start which slowed down loading times a lot, and at one point an upgrade broke a few things so I had to go through and re-link photos and I lost the side bar and shortcuts (which one day I will probably get around to recreating).

I have used Wordpress before and might have to bite the bullet. Wix is a bit too expensive for me.
