The ones leaving are the best educated ones. It’s basically a brain drain, similar to what happens to a lot of developing countries. Once the process starts, it’s hard to reverse because it’s a self reinforcing cycle.

Its a concern in the south east Atlantic area as well. I remember reading concerns about it in the paper when I worked there for a bit

The US might be a worse place for lower skilled jobs due to lack of public health and low minimum wage but at the other end of the spectrum most people would be giving up a lot of opportunities and income to move to countries like Australia or NZ. Our economies are comparatively small, undiversified and lacking investment.

He’s planning to fire a ton of government employees unless they bend the knee, and if he starts messing with universities a bunch of scientists would be pressured to say the ‘right’ things as well. If that happens, those people would leave. Plus, in those other countries, health care isn’t tied to your employment.

As long as the US has wealthy safe haven states they are going to be a more attractive destination for people with high demand, high income jobs. As long as those safe havens and state rights exist I don’t think US citizens are going to qualify for entry as refugees for some time. In the unlikely event the law and society breaks down completely people will need to get in line with all the millions fleeing war and genocide. Those that get in through skilled immigration will need to carefully weigh up the significant financial and career consequences.

Germany was the worldwide leader in science before the Nazis. We may see a shift to Europe or China if science is actively suppressed in the USA.

Other countries have villages being firebombed and families being slaughtered. I am not uncaring but disenfranchised American’s are way at the back of the queue. The only political parties that are going to preference US political refugees over genuine humanitarian refugees are going to have exactly the sort of bigoted attitudes you are seeking to avoid. Fix your own mess people. Get on a bus, travel to a red state and actually talk to people. You keep bashing them over the head about them being stupid bigots but then you refuse to engage with them. That clearly isn’t working.

Countries have different immigration streams, and skilled people that have matching language skills are put way in front of refugees in every country. Countries like Australia and New Zealand will be jumping at the chance to get scientists and health care professionals from the US. They’re already picking off everyone they can find in the UK.

The people trying to leave are the people that the majority of the US voted to sacrifice to the golden bull. Yanno, black people, LGBT people, immigrants, people with disabilities, and so forth.

But go ahead, sit on your high-horse and tell us that it’s our fault that the majority of US voters want us dead, okay? Go ahead, how am I personally deserving of my impending fate?

      Don’t victim-blame, asshole.

Ok, that was a very throw-away comment, I did think about deleting it - but I’ll own it.

I’m truly saddened that you will face persecution in your own country by your fellow countrymen. The US is not the only country with problems, our current government here was voted in on anti immigration, anti woke, anti environmental and racist (towards the local indigenous people) policies.

The Republican party is policy wise to the right of both National and the NZ First party as a comparison. They will also control all arms of the government and it is potentially possible for them to amend the constitution without any recourse but it isn’t easy.

So to be clear, they could change our Freedom of Religion and Speech to a Freedom of Christian Religions and “Truthful” Speech and there isn’t a ton that anyone could do to stop them just to give you an idea of the level of power they have taken in this election. It wouldn’t be easy, but the fact that it won’t be impossible should be terrifying.

The goals they have of criminalizing providing abortion services in all cases for the entire country is entirely possible. They could round up every person in the country of a certain nationality and put them in camps like we did with the Japanese during WW2, Trump already cited this act as being something he is considering to deal with immigration.

Historically we killed 90% of our indigenous population. When NZ was signing the Treaty of Waitangi, America was executing the Trail of Tears and rounding up 60,000 Native Americans and making them march 100km to live in a desert, a quarter of them died during the move. We’re not even starting in a similar place here and we’re moving far to the right.

Amending the constitution would take 38 states to get on board IIRC and is not a quick process anyway. The republicans do not control 38 state governments.

They have 6 justices that are happy to interpret the constitution in any way Republicans like already.

They are short about 4 states right now. That isn’t as huge a gap as I’d like. And they have the ability to get the item out to the states.

America was executing the Trail of Tears

The president who did that even ignored the Supreme Court’s ruling to do so.

It’s cool though, no way that a President that awful would still be ingrained in our modern politics. Well except for the fact that he is the Founder of the Democratic Party, you know… the “good” guys.

To be fair, this was before the parties switched which was more left-wing and which was more right-wing in the 1960s. The democratic party of the 1800s was the explicitly racist, pro-slavery party.

The we made some mistakes but we are proud of our heritage deal only works when you’re not massively losing due to being out of touch with the morals of your base. It’s easier for me to not see the parallels when they are not sending troops to cleanse Gaza. When you look at the votes for them and realize that it is a combination of both the people who want Democrats and the people who just don’t want Trump and they STILL can’t win it is a huge issue.

It’s the oldest political party in the world, maybe it is time to rebuild it in a cleaner image.

You got what you wanted and skullfucked our country. You can stop putting words into peoples mouths. Above user did not defend the democratic party, they pointed out the party swap and pre-Southern Strategy party makeup. Give it a rest with this shit. No democrat will ever actually be elected ever again, more than likely.

The American people spoke and helped clarify what it means to be an American. It’s fair that some folks who last week felt proud to be an American now would prefer to be almost anything else.
