At some point in the early 90s my mom’s American Staffordshire Terrier was stolen. About a week later a pair of guys show up at the house with the dog. “Lady, please take your dog back!”. He shoves the dog through the doorway and they take off as fast as he can.

I got distracted and forgot there were two guys halfway through the sentence.
I do things like that all the time. To be honest when I read it I smiled as I imagined one guy picking up the other and hauling ass.
I mean tbf, if they’re going together, then one could likely go faster than the other. So only one is going as fast as he can.
Yeah, that happened with my dog once. She came back with her nails completely spent, so I think somebody lost a door that night.
I remember this story from my childhood. It was rather funny.
Not as famous as Gift of the Magi, but O Henry is pretty iconic in general
