Anyway, yeah. I just fully expect shit like this from tv companies. They’re not TVs, they’re surveillance boxes with a screen. They will collect any and all data they can. I stopped updating my 2018 model in about 2020 or so when it bricked itself by auto-updating to a version that required my signature on a new set of T&Cs, and if I didn’t accept the new T&C’s I couldn’t use the TV any more. No downgrading to the old version, just “accept this or don’t use your tv any more”. So that was when I cut off its internet connection and never looked back. If it ever breaks or needs to be replaced I don’t know what I’ll do really - look for some projector or computer monitor I suppose, since all tvs are like this now.

Fun fact: the human brain can process speech considerably faster than the human vocalization systems can form it, so you can probably watch most videos on 1.25-1.75 speed wothout missing much, it just takes some adjustment.
At this point I cant watch people talking at a camera on anything slower than 1.5, because thats just the default videos play in (changed a setting on freetube and now cant stand slow), but I have watched 6+ hour videos that way. It cuts a substantial amount of time, and the speed up helps keep me engaged.
Yeah I know people who listen to podcasts this way. This robs me of any pleasure to consume media, so I‘d rather not.

A movie is two hours of entertainment, this is two hours of a person talking about tv’s podcast style without a story. Big difference.
Just don’t watch it. Nobody is forcing you to watch it. But bragging about keeping yourself ignorant solely because you are too lazy to sit and consume media longer than tiktok videos is not a good look for you.
Bruh, nobody here is bragging. We’re simply agreeing that watching one guy talk to a camera for two hours is about as entertaining as watching paint dry. I sat down and binge watched six movies the other day so no, staying engaged with content longer than a tiktok isn’t my issue.
if you want to convey information there should be a summary up front. they somewhat did that in the first minutes so that’s ok.

The thing is, it just isnt even a surprise anymore. In fact I’d be more surprised if these devices weren’t doing this. What worries me is that the industry seems to think its acceptable and more often than not there are no consequences.
Before buying a TV we researched what you can use without giving it internet access. Turns out that is quite a few. We got a Samsung and indeed we never had to, and just use it as a dumb screen
I haven’t watched the Gamers Nexus video(they are the ones doing the research on this subject) yet, but according to their preview in their previous video, it seems they hinted at the fact that some tvs can access the internet even though you don’t physically connect them.
I was also of the belief that if you just kept your smart tv dumb then it wouldn’t be a problem, but it seems like that is not entirely true.
I’ve got no cell reception inside, thanks to aluminum siding, but it’s going to be annoying as fuck if I have to open up my next TV and figure out which circuit board traces are antennae or which chips are wireless.

I guess they could do that if they included a wireless modem in the TV. That would be kind of crazy though - companies don’t make that much money off harvesting user data like this, so paying for a mobile connection would be surprising to me.
IIRC the user marketing data exfiltration method pioneered by Samsung several years ago involves a form of Bluetooth P2P/mesh networking whereby a TV with no internet connection can handshake with, for example, a neighbor’s TV which does have internet enabled or, if they’re just as tinfoil as you and disabled their internet, your data and theirs could simply be relayed to another neighbor’s TV on a different floor, etc etc

That’s a good question re: gdpr. Regional activation of those modules in FW revision is certainly possible. But my guess is that the difference relates to the payload contents and whether or which PII is permitted by any particular local laws, since I expect that would maximize profits.
