Hello fine people of this lovely community. Like normal, this thread is the place to collect all your random anime thoughts, hot takes, and questions. Some example conversation starters:
- I really liked Rent a Girlfriend and was wondering what to watch next?
- My brain is too smooth to understand Evangelion. ELI5?
- My Neighbor Totoro is a trash movie. Allow me to count the ways…
- Is there any news about a season 2 of Usagi Drop? I really love where the manga goes after the anime and wanted to know when it might get adapted.
As always, remember to be mindful of spoilers. If you want to know more about how to handle spoilers, I wrote a guide for you to reference.
Finally got some time to watch a bit:
- The Attack on Titan finale was great, imo. I think that pretty much secured it as my all time #1 for a completed series that’s more than 1 season. It’s not perfect, for sure, but it got so much right considering the weight of its story. Really liked it.
- Almost done with Castlevania Nocturne. I know many don’t really consider it anime, but it’s close enough I throw it in. I like it, but the stakes are harder to care about compared to the very engaging first season premise, and the characters aren’t quite as charming. Still a fun story and worth watching.
- Still keeping up with Frieren (phenomenal), and a bit behind in Helck, Eminence S2, Girlfriend Girlfriend, 100 Girlfriends, SpyXFamily. Enjoying them all.
- Tried first episode of Pluto and was imptessed. Throwing it on the to-watch mountain.
- Still need to get to Apothecary Diaries, Blue Eyed Samurai, and new Scott Pilgrim. This season has truly been ridiculous.
Oh and got a good lol from those examples of spicy takes. Almost spit out my coffee. Whew.
Does anyone know what’s gonna happen to rest of JJK S2? Are they airing like normal or has there been any delays announced.
I haven’t seen any announcements. If I had to guess, I would expect the show to continue to come out regularly. However, if things continue to spiral over at Mappa, then the quality could decline as the show continues. Time will tell.
I hope they are treated better and are paid what they deserve.
Just wanted to swing by and give an update that there is now a 1 day delay for the next episode making its way to streaming services.
Oh thanks. But what happened to that standoff situation. Did Mappa defuse the situation with the animators??
No idea past the previous posts to twitter. The situation is likely still unfolding. I wouldn’t be surprised if delays like this one continue. That is what has happened for past shows like Zom 100 and Nier. The delays start as a day or two and then get extended to a longer hiatus once they run out of booked timeslots for the broadcast season.
Did something happen with JJK? I was a couple episodes behind, but caught up yesterday, so I guess I’m out of the loop if there was a delay.
Here is an article about it. Basically a giant corporation is doing giant corporation things and driving the animators to work on unreasonable timelines with a ton of extra crunch. There has been some recent pushback against Mappa in the past week or two from others in the industry.
We are a bit more than halfway through the season so far, so I thought it would be a good chance to stop and take stock of what I have been watching and what I think about it. Like a midterm exam if you will.
- The Eminence in Shadow - Really enjoyed the first arc of the season while the second was a bit disappointing to me (a source reader). However, it seems anime-only reactions have been more positive. With five episodes left, this final arc of the season should be able to have the time it needs to make it special.
- Frieren - This is another series in which I am a source reader. The adaptation so far has been really incredible. I cannot say enough good things about this series.
- 100 Girlfriends - Another series for which I am a source reader. So far, I have enjoyed the adaptation. I think they have made some effort to keep the meta-humor in the series. Also, I haven’t gone back and checked the early manga chapters, but I don’t remember so much fan service in the source.
- Girlfriend, Girlfriend - Another series for which I am a source reader. I personally think this series works better in manga form. Naoya and company are just so exaggerated in print form and with how absurd the story is, I think the over-the-top-ness of the manga helps carry the story better. I find myself getting bored sometimes watching the series in anime form.
- The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch - I started this series in the hope it was just a feel good SOL in a fantasy setting. However, between the opening episodes featuring fan service of a character they repeatedly point out is 16 years old and then the awkward story pacing, I have mostly dropped this series. I have not read the source, but I was able to guess that it was a 4 koma based on how awkwardly told the story is with frequent interruptions and transitions. Apparently not every 4 koma series can get the Bocchi or Tomo treatment.
As always, @ram@lemmy.ca if you would please do the pin/unpin honors.
Don’t forget Apothecary diaries. It is equally tied to frieren on must watch of the season.
Yes, that is definitely on my list to watch from this season, I just haven’t had time to pick up any new shows with my work schedule lately. I also have had to pause watching some older shows I had been working my way through (sorry Zombie Land Saga season 2, I’ll be back soon).
I just finished the Enies Lobby arcs in the One Piece anime.
To those who’ve suffered through the glacial pacing, should I just swap to the manga? I really like 1p, but it has this terrible habit of killing all tension by putting the stuff I care the most about at the end of a comical amount of tedious shounen battle sequences that each go on for way too long, and flashing back way too much all the while. I skipped like 5 episodes and the only thing that actually changed was that the big threat actually appeared on the island, and I kind of hate that.
Yes, I would recommend reading the manga instead.
I have watched like 500 episodes and then read like 700 chapters of One Piece. I think content-wise one episode equals one chapter. But in reading the pacing feels way better to me.
Part of that is that dialogue can be read faster than the lines are spoken in the anime and that you can look at the individual panels of fight sequences for however short or long you like.
It takes me like 10 minutes to read a chapter.
- I caved and watched the final Attack on Titan special subbed. Did not regret it. I do notice that the VAs are more “shouty” in Japanese. The German dubs I regularly watch are more similar to everyday conversation.
- Rewatched Suzume no Tojimari subbed. It’s better than dub in terms of VAs. It could not salvage the dialogue-writing though, which is a step down from Your Name and Weathering With You. I wonder of Shinkai’s next movie would depart from the Your Name formula.
- Frieren: Lügner looks a lot like Johan Liebert. Remove the horns, and he’s genderbent Violet Evergarden.
Is there any news about a season 2 of Usagi Drop? I really love where the manga goes after the anime and wanted to know when it might get adapted.
Bro, gimme your juiceI have previously written about some of the issues I had with Suzume. I think it is a visually stunning movie. I just wish it was better written.
As for Usagi Drop, I really enjoyed the anime and looked up the source. However, when I looked it up, pretty much all I found was threads warning or memeing about it. So, I looked up the synopsis and realized that I was fine with just the anime.
✍️🔥🔥🔥
I agree with your takes there. I’ll add that whether someone thinks it is a masterpiece or not hinges on how well did the themes resonate with their personal experiences.
To add to Frieren, I’m interested to see how well it would hold up against the fabled FMAB-related rating bombs.
Just me or has the community grown at quick pace last 2 weeks or so
I’m not sure. I’m mostly seeing the same set of people ever since I started commenting on posts to not keep them barren land.
Does anyone know any good comedies? I like actual dedicated comedies, like The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
I’ve just now noticed that there actually aren’t all that many. If you browse by comedy tags you only find shows that have some jokes and “haha goofy” moments but aren’t really comedies.
You know something that is comedy first and everything else later. Most shows listed as comedy are like 10 different genres before they are a comedy.
Something that actually makes you laugh instead of just producing a smirk.
I hope that makes sense. The less popular the better.
The tag you want might be “Gag Humor”
Asobi Asobase
Lucky Star
Azumanga Daioh
Gintama
Bocchi the Rock
I have a few favorites, I plan to rewatch them soon:
- Nichijou
- Daily Lives of Highschool Boys
- Sakamoto desu ga
And a few others I can’t remember. Some of them also have good comedy but aren’t mainly focused on comedy, so I excluded them.
thanks, I’ll have a watch
Any recommendations for dark horse of the season. Undead Girl Murder Farce is a good example of last season’s dark horse.
I just recently finished Higurashi, now I want to try out Umineko and see why they were mentioning it in the first place in Higurashi’s forums. Seems like they were somehow connected. I also peeked at the characters in Umineko and, call me crazy, found 2 very obvious references: Bernkastel Frederica is literally Rika, Lambdadelta seems like Sakoto or Takano (though more like Sakoto), and So should I watch the anime or read the manga. Though not preferred I might also try to read the VN if I do ever find the game translated in english in torrents. Looking at MAL, the people that read the manga/VN hate the anime because the adaptation was absolute bullshit.
I also take recommendations for any anime that is similar to Higurashi.
Did I miss something? Where have all the English dubs gone? All of the shows that I watch on Friday and Saturday, which had scheduled dubbed episode releases, just… didn’t. Dr Stone and JJK both got their episodes on Thursday, in spite of the holiday, and other shows earlier in the week came out, then everything(that I watch at least) after Thursday just didn’t come out. No amount of googling leads me to any useful information, just links back to Crunchyroll, where the last dubbed episodes are all least weeks episodes. And if I check the schedule page on the Funimation site, it’s literally blank and says there are no shows of any kind, in any capacity, scheduled for the next 12 weeks. I assume that’s a bug on their site, as usual.
