I recently found this Firefox extension that looks safe (I checked some network activity but DOUBLE CHECK) and brings back Karma on Lemmy!
INB4: if you don’t like karma on lemmy, you are in good company. There is no need to hate the ones that do like them.
Of course being unofficial it’s just a cosmetic feature, so it hopefully can be a funny thing without going to be toxic like on Reddit.
How much karma do u have?
Karma inherently breeds monotony and circlejerking. When people “farm” for fake internet pointe by appealing to the oppinions of everyone else it leads to people just expressing one “right” (popular) oppinion.
I think we are fine without a karma system, but if you like it go ahead and use the extension. I’m happy I don’t have to worry about karma, and worst of all, karma minimums on communities here.
(for the above one: this is a nice answer which keeps things polite and enjoyable)
Absolutely, for me is just a silly thing I will look just to remember all the things i posted. I agree competitiveness is the worst. To be honest: I feel that “circlejerking” thing also for upvotes/downvotes but i guess is personal
When people “farm” for fake internet pointe by appealing to the oppinions of everyone else it leads to people just expressing one “right” (popular) oppinion.
We have the same result already, for several reasons. One is, we do have karma within threads.
Another is, people will get backlash for voicing the “wrong” opinion even if there is no point system. People happily reply to correct someone.
Ah karma. That’s something I really did not miss one fucking second. It can stay there please!
I don’t like gamification features as (like ABA) they reek of behavioral psychology.
what’s aba
applyied behavioral analytics. A type of therapy used primarily for individuals with disabilities that relies on reward systems heavily. ABA though, to me shouldnt be controversial because of it using gamification but because of the specific behaviors often targeted with the interventions. Positive behaviorism is pretty much the standard in education even outside of this therapy and outside special education.
No, absolutely not.
Karma is a gameification concept designed to hook you into constant interaction with the site. It is utterly toxic.
It’s not needed. It doesn’t drive originality or communication and encourages the exact opposite. I don’t post here to get popular but for my own enjoyment. I look forward to the day the niche communities I loved on reddit become a thing here without the karma influence, would hate to have it just be another copy.
If you want to see your “Karma” Kbin natively has a reputation feature - Having said that I disagree with the idea entirely.
It isn’t a good way to gauge trustworthiness as it can easily be farmed by posting large amounts of mediocre content that people are likely just to upvote passively.
It’s far better to just look at someone’s post history to see the substance of their contributions to the site - obviously that takes more work to check, but it’s also way harder to fake.
No thank you
if you want to view exposed ‘karma’, you’ll nee to pick a different product than lemmy. id suggest kbin/mbin.
the lemmy devs are hard set against it.
Noted. It was just a funny innocent thing tbh but I see, is a spicy topic in the lemmy community
they really want to be this alternative/off-ramp to reddit but dont really want to provide the features that draw users to reddit. i get it, some of those features are abused to some extent.
i feel this feature should be instance-specific. the developers shouldnt make that call. the instance admin should be able to enable what the community wants. if lemmy.world hates karma, groovy, but let lemmy.ca show it if they want.
totally agree on that. If we want to keep being a healthy alternative to reddit, freedom is the minimum i expect
Fuck no!
I’ve been using this for a few weeks now. Forgot it wasn’t always there
gah. no offense to karma sluts but my main hope is the federation would be made up of the reddit folks who don’t care about karma and only know about it because of the insistent posts about karma. I like various forms of upvoting to identify good content but also as a type of bookmarking so I sorta like the boost as well as upvote. like one is hey I think this is a good post or comment but another is like this is so good I want to be able to find it later.
Boost let’s you see the karma on someone’s account. I only really use it if I think someone is a troll. It’s helpful to know if someone is in the negative karma.
there never was any karma on lemmy to begin with…
sorry I meant “bring back Karma from reddit” , I am non native so I might have expressed bad
So to bring the sole reason, that users swapped from reddit to lemmy, back?
What a genious.
No need to be offensive.
Oh sorry if i am offensive with it. It was just my opinion. Everyone should of course do what they want on lemmy. And if anyone wants to add Karma back, they should. But what they should keep on reddit, is the attitude oh you have low karma = you bad or you are just not worth my time.
Your opinion is okay and I agree with it. I just pointed you didn’t need to call the OP a “genius”.
I guess you missed the whole
if you don’t like karma on lemmy, you are in good company. There is no need to hate the ones that do like them.
I could argue people (like me) swapped from reddit also because we were tired of the “if you disagree with me you are a stupid” attitude but I guess is universal
Cheers, just skip the post
Its not that i disagree but i see the risk that the karma will come back as hey you have low karma, you cant do sh*t. Or the whole thing with “Karma farming”. People posting more what everyone wants to hear and not whats right or interesting for some.
Hrm, I think people already do that though.
Just that now instead of clicking on someone and looking at their single Karma value, they click on someone and then scroll down briefly, looking at the point values of the newest comments and posts. It happens anyways because to a user it is desirable to get a non-complicated “is what this person writes in general meh, or is this their one-off post”-answer if they can get one, even if it has of course at best marginal value as an actual indicator (as the karma value does. Or does not, more like.).
As always, the issue is not people being fundamentally bad, or fundamentally good, but being fundamentally people. 😅
Thats a good critic indeed. I agree on that, as I stated below being a non farmer and quite outside the world of karma farmers I only saw it as a naive cosmetic thing
Reddit was using karma for a long time and people stayed. The exodus happened when reddit announced charging for using their API, and everything that came along. Karma was no significant part of that story.
I might be misunderstanding your sentence, but people swapped to Lemmy from Reddit because Reddit removed karma values? (because say “back”) I don’t think they ever removed it.
No, i meant it as that. Because of downsides of karma on reddit ( with restricting things to only over x ammount of karma ) many swapped from reddit. Because lemmy doesnt have it ( or rather shouldnt have it as pre 0.19 it was just an oversight ) i said “back” because i was referencing it to lemmy. I am not a native english speaker.
I’m not a big fan of karma either, I definitely don’t want to see it baked into the core protocol. However with this implementation, it doesn’t seem to harmful as most users won’t have it.
I would also love to see some experimentation with different methods of assigning karma on the fediverse. The Community Notes algorithm from twitter is very interesting as it boosts answers that have support across many groups of users. It’s an attempt to encourage answers that reach across divides, instead of ones that foster echo chambers.
Let a million experimental flowers bloom!
No. It’s one of the things I like, that makes Lemmy different from Reddit. Why create a Reddit clone?
What’s karma? I thought it was
upvotes - downvotes
, which lemmy already does.
