Yeah but have you been on an instance like Lemmy.world when it stutters and stumbles all day because it’s overloaded? I’d rather host images somewhere else and have the instance work

It’s not that you’re wrong, it’s just that storage gets very expensive very quickly and they’re trying to keep their costs down. IIRC the 100kb limit was so that we can upload avatars, but the idea is that if you’re posting images, you host it elsewhere (like Imgur) and post the URL here instead of the image itself

You can use imgur and paste a link to the high quality image, or fiddle with it a little to fit the limit. 100kb is fine for web use, imo. Crop, resize, convert to something like webp format… Instances are run by individuals, a server in someone’s bedroom. Not exactly a company with $15+ billion evaluation (dec2021) like reddit. It’s far from perfect, obviously. But it’s much better than I expected at first.

Eh, I post loads of pics and yeah it’s an extra step to upload to Imgur first but it’s hardly the end of the world. It is in fact how posting to forums used to work!

Anything that keeps our instance running as well as it is while all the others are burning to the ground is fine by me.

The admin did it for a reason after seeing the scaling issues of other networks, it’s in the lemm.ee sidebar. But you can use another instance without that limit to post to lemm.ee and it will be hosted there instead of lemm.ee. I’ve been doing that for a photography community and it’s been working pretty well

no, no incremente, prefiero un entorno donde se genere debate a simples imágenes sin texto, es la gran diferencia, ademas es facil pedir sin aportar ni colaborar en los gastos del servidor,

I think sunaurus (the admin) mentioned before that the limit was based on likely avatar sizes. I’m guessing native pic upload is mostly meant for that purpose. Maybe try posting memes on imgur?
