  • Don’t care about follower numbers, and post what’s on your mind or engage with others as you see fit. The big one for me though was curating my tabs (feeds), using Antennas was easy for this. So for example, my ‘Home’ tab is an Antenna tab with a bunch of keywords and phrases that I’m looking for, for example ‘linux gaming’ and ‘retro gaming’.

Took some setup, but super happy with it now

  • Not your question, but just want to talk about the Mastodon bit.

I’ve always been interested in microblogging platforms since Twitter originally released, but I’ve never been able to really engage with them. Over the years I tried Twitter numerous times, later X, tried Bluesky a couple of times, and also tried Mastodon and failed to stick with it.

However lately I’ve switched to Sharkey (using Aria on Android), which is a fork of Misskey. Sharkey federates with Mastodon, Misskey, and a couple of others that I’m mind blanking on right now.

It’s only been coming up to a month since I switched, and I’m absolutely loving it! Plenty of engagement, the Antennas keywords and phrases thing is awesome, and it’s just really nice to be on a platform like that without a damn algorithm dictating what I consume

  • For that device I personally would focus more on SNES and GameBoy gaming (up to Advance), so I’ll just mention a couple of my favourites.

    SNES:

    • Chrono Trigger > One of the best JRPGs ever. If never played before, well worth giving this a try.
    • Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars > Sooo much fun, easy to burn hours.

    GameBoy:

    • Pokemon Red/Blue/Green > Original Pokemon series, if you love it you love it.
    • Pokemon Yellow > The Special Pikachu Edition has Pikachu following you around, its cute, and the one I would recommend personally out of the originals.
    • WarioLand 2 > One of my favourite platformers on the GB.
    • GameBoy Gallery 2 > Contains old Game and Watch games but with a (at the time) modern take on them + the original versions. I’ve wasted hours beyond hours playing modern Fire.

    GameBoy Color:

    • Pokemon Gold/Silver > It’s Pokemon lol
    • Swiv > Kind of forgotten title, but really fun scrolling shooter (I think this the best way to describe it)

    GameBoy Advance:

    • Pokemon Fire Red > An updated version of the original Pokemon Red. If it’s your first time playing any of the originals, I would say try this one as it feels more modern to play due to the updated pixel art.

  • Okay I just reread your post, as I missed the bit you mentioned about instances like blahaj hiding the downvotes.

So a couple of questions for you.

You mentioned the communities aren’t on the instances that hide downvotes… Are these communities that live on instances that are not federated with for example blahaj.zone?

And also, you mentioned that instances that are hiding downvotes is also not a solution due to the downvoter and others still being able to see the downvotes. So I ask, why is that an issue for you? Why be worried about fake internet points that aren’t even really tracked here (unlike Reddit for example), that you can’t even see? Actual engagement in discussion between people is far more important no?
