No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What do all the subgenres of music mean? How does anyone make sense of them?English
8·5 hours agoIt sounds like you want a clear set of rules as to what defines every possible genre of music, which does not and cannot exist.
Genres only exist for the purpose of subjective comparison. Anyone can create them by taking some elements common to several pieces of music and labelling that as a genre. There’s no master list or governing body that decides exactly what constitutes ‘art rock’. It just is.
Use them as labels if you find it useful to make a distinction that they allow for. If you don’t see the difference between death metal and heavy metal, great - you don’t need to.

8·2 days agoConsole certifications only check that a game is functional and meets platform requirements (like achievements, peripheral support, accessibility).
They’re there to ensure a game works and won’t brick any systems or steal bank details etc. They don’t typically check that a game is ‘good’, since it’s so subjective.

1727·3 days agoFuck off, sincerely. It’s hard enough out there for game devs as it is without heartless idiots online celebrating the demise of their studios.
Also, obviously, fuck Meta for closing them.

67·7 days agoUnless you’re aiming for a specific path (when replaying, for example), I do find it’s much more satisfying when an RPG allows you to fail and then follow through with the consequences, without just hitting a hard stop or making you feel like you got a lesser experience as a result.
But it does rely on trust - I need to trust that a game is designed to do that before I commit to playing in a way where I don’t immediately reload a save when I fail a skill check.

Games@lemmy.world•Two former Polygon editors say they are launching Mothership, a new game publication, on January 26, to analyze games through the lens of gender and identityEnglish
114·7 days agoCurious what about this new publication makes you label it a tabloid? Based on the description so far it doesn’t sound sensationalist at all.
You’ll find reviews, criticism, and opinion stories, as well as articles about how games are made and marketed. You’ll get investigative reporting on the people who make games in an era when “DEI” is on the wane. You’ll read historical deep dives on the games and creators that paved the way, especially those that didn’t get due credit way back then.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What time is your cats' bedtime; is it the same as yours and there is co-sleeping?English
17·8 days agoOur cat loves bedtime - it genuinely seems to be her favourite part of the day, even over mealtimes.
If we don’t go to bed on time, she will come and yell/paw at us until we start getting up off the sofa. The bedtime routine starts with feeding her, but 9 times out of 10 she will ignore the food and run upstairs to wait for us.
Once we’re settled in, she jumps on the bed and gets brushed. Then she waits for me to turn off the lamp before she will get up and go eat. It’s like she’s putting us to bed. She then comes back and spends most of the night with us.

Latest steam hardware survey has 52.58% of people using 1920x1080 as their primary display resolution. The next most common res is indeed 2560x1440 but only at 20.59%, so it’s significantly less common.

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•How to play old CD-ROM games on a modern Windows PCEnglish
28·19 days agoThe sheer amount of finagling required to get older games working on modern Windows is a big reason why projects like ExoDOS and ExoWin9x are so important for game preservation.
Getting these games to play from their original media is only going to get harder over time; eventually, playing archived/preserved digital versions will be the only way to experience them.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•SuperTux 0.7 Beta Lands With Massive World RedesignsEnglish
30·19 days agoIt is wild to me that SuperTux has been going for 22 years and still hasn’t hit 1.0.
They started this project the same year Double Dash, Vice City, and Call of Duty came out.
I don’t really mean that as an insult, by the way - it’s just kinda crazy that this 2D platformer project is still going and, apparently, still not done.

Retro Gaming Enthusiast@discuss.online•ShaderBeam – CRT Beam Emulation Windows AppEnglish
1·20 days agoSeems neat! But the best thing about ShaderGlass is that it’s almost completely fuss free - you just run the app and off you go. This? Not so much.
To get the best results, you’ll need two GPU’s…sorta. It’s recommend you enable the built in GPU that’s on most motherboards and run ShaderBeam on that, then use your main GPU for the actual output.
This immediately sounds like too much work for my lazy ass.
I’d think it’s obvious that downloading isn’t illegal in every case, otherwise you’d never be able to watch/listen to any media online.
A differentiation is necessarily made between authorised and unauthorised downloads, such that buying and downloading an album on iTunes is legal while torrenting that same album is not.
Music on YouTube is authorised via licensing. That’s why videos get routinely flagged for using copyrighted music without permission (and sometimes even with permission due to overzealous or malicious DMCA claims, but that’s a separate argument).
