Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•So how would you say you decide the precise allocation of donations between starving people in Gaza & Programmers For BeerEnglish
4·6 days agoWhy don’t we take care of each other as decent people? Why do we have to decide who is more worthy? We have too many money-grubbing billionaires. Maybe if we watched out for each other, we wouldn’t have to worry about what the other guy is doing.
Maybe it wouldn’t work, but it would be nice to try. Look what happened in 1914:
I mean, I found this one on #memes, so it must be true.

Technology@lemmy.world•Ordinary WiFi can now identify people with near perfect accuracyEnglish
133·18 days ago“This technology turns every router into a potential means for surveillance,” warns Julian Todt from KASTEL. “If you regularly pass by a café that operates a WiFi network, you could be identified there without noticing it and be recognized later – for example by public authorities or companies.”
Later…
Inexpensive or older routers either don’t store history at all or keep it for a short time.
Newer models can store more information for more extended periods.

Australia@aussie.zone•We analysed the TikTok history of 142 men. Here’s what it taught us about the manosphereEnglish
0·22 days agoThe manosphere doesn’t create these pressures – it finds genuine unmet needs and exploits them for profit and views. Often girls, women and other minority groups are at the receiving end of that harm, as well as the boys and men themselves.
Before TikTok/Internet, there was TV. Before TV was print media (newspapers, magazines).
Ad from 1932

This has been going on (for everyone) a lot longer than TikTok. That said, I don’t think it’s healthy. Also with print media you saw it once or twice in a magazine, and you didn’t have an algorithm feeding you a stream of content either.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Many mythology seem to share a concept of spirits is there an explanation for that?English
111·27 days agoYour question is broader than you think.
For one culture to have an idea and share it to others isn’t uncommon. Pyramids are in Egypt and Mesoamerica. Giants exist in many cultural myths (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_giants_in_mythology_and_folklore) as are ghosts (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ghosts).
You see, an idea that’s communicated is a meme.
" A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices, that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme. "
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meme
If you’re considering spirit as a soul
https://www.planksip.org/the-concept-of-the-soul-in-ancient-philosophy-and-soul-1763067454225/
TL;DR: So, why does it exist across cultures? It’s a meme.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is Roots really that controversial that it needs to be banned? Haven't watched the movie cause I quit pot and haven't read the book but isn't it like historical or something?English
35·27 days ago“Roots” was among the first widely read works of fiction to offer a detailed account of the Middle Passage, the horrific transatlantic journey to America endured by enslaved Africans between the 16th and 19th centuries.
“Prior to its release, the impact of slavery was easy to diminish or deny by those that benefited the most from that system,” said Annastasia Williams, bookshop director at The Bottom bookstore and cultural organization.
