You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Assets in a bank, stock market, 401(k) or pension are not guaranteed
2·21 days agoThis post wasn’t about recommendations, just information that people should know. Make your own decisions based on your own assessment of the risks and likely returns associated with each option. I’d say precious metals in your physical possession are a simple option with low risk but that’s my opinion.

2·21 days agoBetter to stash precious metals since they won’t lose their value. Of course there are other options so make your own decisions based on your own assessment of the various risks involved.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Europol predicts a 2035 with no privacy, robot police, robots displacing workers, debates about "robot rights" and criminals commanding hundreds of drones simultaneously
0·24 days agoRuling with an iron fist tends to create resistance and without mass surveillance technology an unpopular regime couldn’t keep everyone in line. But if instead most people are in agreement about something being bad (like they are with slavery or pedophilia) then there is much less resistance to enforcement against it (whether that’s centralized or decentralized enforcement) and therefore that thing is more effectively stopped.
While lone individuals or small secretive groups could continue doing the bad practice, in terms of technology I don’t think this will matter much because they won’t be able to develop a lot of technology with only a small group of people who aren’t building on other people’s work and their technology also wouldn’t be adopted by a society that is against it.
So something can’t be called an x unless it meets every definition of x? I don’t think that’s how definitions work.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that Joseph Stalin created the Great Terror. He started killing people randomly including artists, generals, doctors, scientists, government officials. Everyone was terrified.

12·27 days agoI’m only speaking from what I have read. Apparently it is perfectly fine to run engines on biodiesel from using cooking oil or diesel from used motor oil as long as you have a good filtering process using a centrifuge. And I’m not saying that everyone will be able to save or make money this way, just that it’s something one could explore and at least limit the amount of tax they give to a corrupt government.

11·28 days agoMy understanding is that the vast majority of US subsidies in this area are for production rather than consumption subsidies aimed at reducing the price (only $44 billion out of $760 billion). The US is also on the lower end of fossil fuel subsidies compared to other countries at $28.16 per person in 2021, which seems considerably less than how much each person would have paid in fuel taxes that year.

14·28 days agoLike I said, follow the instructions. That includes removing impurities if you’re working with used cooking oil. If it’s unused then that simplifies things.
Doing it at scale may not be economical because of taxes as well as the fact you either need to buy expensive vegetable oil or collect large amounts of used oil from disparate places. For personal use the taxes are avoided and you may be able to get sufficient used oil from a couple of restaurants or neighbors.

When all jobs are able to automated it will mean human intelligence, skill and labor has been surpassed by machines. We will be treated like pets in a world run by machines, like WALL-E. We will have no real autonomy or ability to determine the future of the world. There will no longer be any reason to try at anything, since all useful tasks will be done by machines and the only things humans will do is pass the time and experience emotions. But we know that people aren’t happy unless they have some purpose. Goals, challenges, struggles. Depression is going to skyrocket if machines get to human intelligence.

Agreed. This technology’s existence is a net negative to humanity, whether everyone has it or just the police have it. It all needs to be stopped, no exceptions for any government agency, research lab, corporation and non-profit organization.
