I’m saying it’s happened before. AOL. Palm. Yahoo. Blackberry. A company with an effective monopoly gets complacent and fails to serve their users. They get replaced.

But that’s also a path for them to no longer be a monopoly, if the right competitor makes the right moves.

You can do that kind of imposed structure if it’s an internal tool used by employees. But if the public is using it, it has better be able to parse whatever the consumer is saying. Somebody will say “I want a burger and a coke, but hold the mustard. And add some fries. No make it two of each.” And it won’t fit your predefined syntax.

Because bits are not expensive anymore, and if we used 64 bits, we might run out faster than the time needed to convert to a new standard. (After all, IPv4 is still around 26 years after IPv6 was drafted.) Also see the other notes about how networks get segmented in non-optimal ways. USB PD (Power Delivery) actually does use a higher voltage for more wattage. Standard USB is limited to 5V at 0.5A and sometimes up to 5V @ 2A on quick chargers. But PD chargers can give 20V and 3A for 60w or even 5A (100w) with properly rated cables. There’s even a proposal for up to 48V at 5A to get 240w. This is all determined by a negotiation between the charger, the cable (which does have a small chip for this purpose), and the device, therefore PD chargers must support multiple voltages.

Sounds like sleep. Hibernate is when it turns completely off, such that you can leave it unplugged for a weekend and still have battery when it pops you back into your session. It takes longer to save and restore the session than sleep does.

It does still increase the cost of automating usage of those sites, which puts an upper limit to how they can be abused. But Recall is recording screenshots, not data stored on disk. That’s not the same as Apple’s hourly data snapshot which is just a automated backup of what you have already stored. Recall will be recording the videos or images you watch, even when you don’t keep them locally. It will store the things you decided not to save, and every time you have to open your password manager to check a password, or create a new one. It might be limited to your account, but that still means it’s accessible to anyone who can figure out your password or access your unlocked PC behind your back. Or to that virus you accidentally downloaded, if it’s not immediately detected.

I can run 7B models on my laptop with its embedded GPU. Running on a phone or a Pi is possible with smaller models, but very slow. Expect good speed with a desktop Nvidea GPU. Later this year, there should be new computers with an NPU integrated to the CPU which should speed up computers that don’t have a dedicated GPU. (But a GPU will still outperform them by a lot.)

70B models will run very slowly on even the best consumer hardware due to memory limitations.

I do a lot of code. That means I often deal with three or four programs at the same time, and perhaps 10 loaded throughout the day and I want to see them all. So I have two monitors that are each 27" and 4k.

This means I can see a web browser sized to a full 1080 size, next to a database query, and still see the code that I’m working on, and keep an eye on any new emails or text chats. Without needing to Alt-tab to switch windows. It’s like spreading your work over a dining room table, instead of those little desks you got in high school.

Most apps don’t need to be larger than 1080. But some can be taller to see more code (maybe 160 lines, for example) without scrolling too much. And I hardly ever deal with just one window at a time.

Some of that may not be subjective, even if it is a personal difference. Some need glasses, some don’t get glasses because they just barely need them, and others have problems glasses can’t fix, especially as we age. Some eyes are just different, and that’s physical differences, not just a difference of preference.

I’m switching back and forth at will, which is unusual for me with this type of illusion.
