Technology@lemmy.world•No AI* Here - A Response to Mozilla's Next Chapter - Waterfox BlogEnglish
231·1 month agoWidevine is the defacto standard proprietary technology for DRM-locked content. It’s used by all the major streaming services like Netflix and Disney+. Without it, publishers would not make their content available to those platforms for fear of rampant piracy, especially for high quality and 4K content. I guess Widevine requires some sort of vetted relationship with any browser that wants to use their tech.

9·1 month agoI took it to mean that newer AI browsers were taking mind-share, if not market-share. I think you’re right that they’re minuscule in terms of actual user numbers, perhaps because there are many of them now.

Technology@lemmy.world•The threats from AI are real | Sen. Bernie Sanders [15:02]English
122·2 months agoSounds like Geoffrey Hinton got in Bernie’s ear and did a good job convincing him of the fears. Hinton is a good guy, but he’s drunk too much of his own kool-aid. I think the bubble will pop at some point, but I’d prefer the fear-mongering over the hype, because the AI companies and governments do need more scrutiny.

17·2 months agoI did the math and it’s 49.37% of the population, based on the 2024 census data, or 49.94% if you exclude Puerto Rico and D.C. I suppose mostly due to Texas and Florida being in the list, but also Ohio, Georgia and North Carolina with over 10M people each.
Here's the raw data
Based on the table from Wikipedia, and the list of states in the article.

Technology@lemmy.world•Devs gripe about having AI shoved down their throatsEnglish
6·2 months agoI’d like the bubble to be true so that we can move past this nonsense phase, and it may well be true, but I could also see it being extended for years potentially, since there’s so much money being pumped into it, and governments are also buying into the hype.
You and I are not at odds, friend. I think you’re assuming I want to ban the technology out right. It’s possible to call out the issues with something without being wholly against it. I’m sure you would want to prevent these deaths as well.
A friendly human spell checked me and probably used less than a peanut worth of energy.
Whoops. Fixed, thanks.

3·3 months agoI’d recommend looking at Hedy. It was created to teach kids programming, with a smooth ramp from simple English-like statements all they way to full python, with formal syntax introduced very gradually.

As a bonus, it also allows non-English speakers to use keywords in their native language.

2·6 months agoI concur with the article. I’ve tried various tools but I keep coming back to text files in vim. Recently I’ve been using a
notes/directory with a bash function to quickly create and edit a named text file for a new topic. That gives me the little bit of organization and separation for isolated tasks, while still having a mainnotes.txtfile for miscellaneous notes and todos. I really like being able to stay in the terminal and using ripgrep for everything.

Technology@lemmy.world•America wants AI that doesn't care about misinformation, DEI, and climate changeEnglish
12·6 months agoThe steam/itch situation is a bit complicated. I think the organization behind that action has bad motivations, so it’s not the best example for the long term. My guess is that itch will update their NSFW policy to allow for some NSFW content, but not content that depicts truly heinous material.
The reason I would support that type of activism, to an extent, is that it was effective against Musk when he started turning twitter into a hellscape: https://www.freepress.net/sites/default/files/2022-11/stop_toxic_twitter_coalition_open_letter_to_twitter_final.pdf
