i can confirm that pokémon is normal and lets you have multiple switch accounts with one save each on one console. which is actually a big improvement, because pokémon never let you have multiple saves on one cartridge, so on older consoles you did have to buy multiple cartridges! (thankfully you could share the console because the save was on the cartridge, not the console)

on switch, animal crossing is the only game i can think of where there’s only one save per console. and even then, i think they added save slots in the latest update

recognize that choice is good and what works for some folk won’t work for others. some people want a highly polished experience right out of the box, even if it can’t be customized a ton, and that’s fine. some devs want a UI toolkit that is solid, polished and guarantees that your app will look the same no matter the user’s environment, and that’s fine.

it’s hardware deterioration, it doesn’t matter how bad at coding you are, unless you’re being explicitly malicious you can’t code a game that deteriorates over time lol

my copy of pokémon y had gotten more and more unplayable over the years. at first, it would crash when viewing specific models. then, it would crash in more and more places. last year, when i last used it, it was straight up unplayable, the game would simply not boot.

thankfully, only the ROM was corrupted, i was able to salvage the save data using a hacked console, and now it’s sitting on my computer, backed up, but still… be careful, everyone.

if you have a 3DS, games with saves that matter to you, and some time to kill, make backups. 3DSes are easy to hack, and with online services being shut down, you don’t have to worry about being banned.
