imo the actual etymology is weirder
it was invented by richard dawkins in the selfish gene in the 1970s
it’s used to describe an “idea-gene”; something that spreads and mutates not through biological means but through communication
like a mind-virus
hence why it sounds like a portmanteau of “memory” and “gene”
lime!@feddit.nuto Open Source@lemmy.ml•We are misunderstanding the strenghts of open sourceEnglish11·3 days agolearning to use a workshop has nothing to do with how the tools are constructed. open source means very little to people who are not familiar with software tools, and is not likely to get someone started.
as soon as you are even starting on an intermediate level you need to care a lot, because you start building your own tools. but before that point, open source just means the big players. good luck explaining the benefits of
awk
before they know the difference between office and openoffice.
we could also use it as a file system
prevent people from opposing the government
…so it’s working then
that’s not a workable strategy because when you redefine terms like that you sound just like a conspiracy theorist. exhaust gases are not “chemtrails”, they’re exhaust gases. they’re dangerous and everywhere, but they’re not a secret government conspiracy.
we don’t need a “new way” to talk about things with people who refuse to understand.

lime!@feddit.nuto Linux@lemmy.ml•Progress towards universal Copy/Paste shortcuts on LinuxEnglish1·5 days agoyeah that’d do it. on X11 this is a solved problem, but wayland delegates the responsibility to the wm, and i don’t think anyone other than gnome has actually implemented it. another one of the paper cuts that makes it hard for me to make the switch.
lime!@feddit.nuto Linux@lemmy.ml•Progress towards universal Copy/Paste shortcuts on LinuxEnglish2·5 days agoin most systems this is global. it’s provided by the desktop and programs just see a copy/paste event. are you on wayland by any chance?
i have done this once as an adult. it was late, noisy and hot and i just felt the moment my social battery totally emptied out. had to stand up and say “i have to leave now, good night” because otherwise i would not have had the energy to make it home.
lime!@feddit.nuto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL ancient Romans used communal toilets—stone benches with keyhole-shaped holes—where people sat side by side without privacy, chatting while waste drained beneath them using flowing water.English13·8 days agomy family’s old farmhouse has communal outhouses. this was the norm until like 150-200 years ago, and was still common here into the early 1900s.
i learned from a friend that used to work in banking that some countries have laws that basically make contracts and invoices void if they are not correctly gendered.

that was 10 years ago, and i never get support requests any more. she hasn’t magically become technical, she just learned how to do the most basic things again. the difference is that nothing breaks on its own now.
i’ve seen atms running os/2 warp. they take what they are given.
it’s not, chernobyl doesn’t have cooling towers
sorry for tisming
yes. except for the first few months (usually the first half-a-year) when both parties can terminate the employment within one month.
i am a shareholder. buying shares is only open to people working in the company. you have to sell them back when you leave.
