Still stuck? I was going to wait for it to show up in the repos, but it hasn’t so far. So here’s how I did it (for my regular user account, not system-wide):
git clone https://github.com/NetHack/NetHack cd NetHack sys/unix/setup.sh sys/unix/hints/linux.500Now you’ve got a
Makefilein the top-levelNetHackas well as thesrcsubdirectory. Find theelse #!WANT_SOURCE_INSTALLblock in both and editHACKDIRto set the directory for the game itself andSHELLDIRto set the directory for the launcher script.(And if I actually knew how to use
make, I’d probably have a less clunky method than this. Anyone?)make fetch-Lua make all make install

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Civilization VII Linux and Mac ports announcedEnglish
1·2 years agoSeems pretty clear to me: “We’re also releasing Civilization VII for MacOS and Linux / SteamOS” doesn’t just not mention Proton, there also isn’t a Proton on MacOS Steam. And you don’t get Linux and Mac system sepcs and platform icons on Windows-only games on Steam whether or not you can run them with Proton; you get ”Steam Deck Verified”.
(I’m half expecting them to walk that back later but for now the message seems clear.)

Is that even an option on the Mac? And “Proton games” wouldn’t show the Mac and SteamOS platform icon on the Steam store.
We’re also releasing Civilization VII for MacOS and Linux / SteamOS. However, we don’t have specs to share for those platforms at this time.

Now whether all this is just a mix-up in this age of “Linux ports aren’t worth it and they always suck anyway”… maybe.
Wired and wireless X-Box 360 controllers with the built-in kernel drivers, generally hassle-free these days!

Yes. I think Elder Scrolls Online and Guild Wars 2 were my last “anchors” to Windows (7, at the time). I barely ever booted into it… I wanted to be NOT IN WINDOWS more than I wanted to play big fat luxury games.
But I did keep it around until there just wasn’t anything left that I wanted to run but couldn’t. The first Humble Indie Bundles with games like FEZ and Limbo had been out by that point as well as a few bigger titles like The Witcher 2. Wine was much more painful than it is now.
I’ve generally made sure not to buy too “crazy” hardware (like Bluetooth controllers… yes, I’m old and a neophobe and I don’t know what else).

1·3 years agoThat could be sweet. Of course, they’ve already tried that, but SteamOS wasn’t really ready then.
And I suppose anyone can get a random mini PC and install Steam on it…

Wine has come a long way! Though Linux-native gaming is not on AAA studios’ radar…

Retro Computers@lemmy.world•Commodore Plus/4: Usage ConcernsEnglish
0·3 years agoGood luck! I had a plussy growing up and enjoyed the faster disk drive, the advanced BASIC (compared to the VIC-20 and 64) and the machine code monitor/simple assembler it had built in. Nowadays there are quite a few good games too (homebrews and bootleg ports) but back then we mostly had to make do with C16 games (16K…).

I don’t recall where the dump is from. I have a Game Cube and a (German, PAL50/PAL60) Twilight Princess, but no matching monitor/TV. This firmware here looks like it should work with my SATA Blu Ray drive and enable ripping the disc, but I don’t know if I want to risk bricking the drive. The dump I have works with Dolphin, anyway…
