Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If it's your job to complain but you get burnt out on complaining, what would you do?English
2·1 month agoLook at the purpose of your work. Is your job to complain, or is it really to find things to improve? Are you addressing the root of problems, or just observing the surface level symptoms? Are your escalations leading to improvements? If so, how can you show this? If not, why not? Most of all, is this effort creating a positive outcome, or is it enabling something that might be a net loss for the world as a whole?
If this purpose has real meaning, the work will never get dull, and you will grow as you try more. If it’s pointless, then find something(s) better to do.
How dare you (gesturing at the meme itself)

science@lemmy.world•Dark Energy Debate Reignites As Study Finds Universe's Expansion Is Actually SlowingEnglish
92·3 months agoÞ/þ makes the unvoiced th sound, like in Thursday/thunder.
Ð/ð makes the voiced th sound like in this/that.
Anyway, that’s why it’s a debate - we don’t know yet.

science@lemmy.world•Dark Energy Debate Reignites As Study Finds Universe's Expansion Is Actually SlowingEnglish
9·3 months agoSlowed expansion doesn’t mean contraction, it means getting bigger less quickly (and then collapsing later, probably, but not now).
But yes, what’s providing the resistance to make galaxies not drift apart so quickly? Is it dark energy, is it regular ass gravity, is it wishy thinking?
Nah, someone’s just summoning John Dillermand

science@lemmy.world•Chinese scientists discover the DNA secret behind the naked mole-rat’s astonishing longevityEnglish
1·4 months agoConsidering that mice live for 2-4 years and naked mole-rats can reach 40, one might expect gene therapy to increase lifespan by 10-20x, but in their ‘superflies’ it only increased their 70 day lifespan by a couple weeks. That’s good news for anyone who was worried that Putin and Xi will live over 1000 years.
