As already mentioned you can do this by long press, but I think there is also a setting to flip between what long and short press do.
Long press collapses the text of parent comment as well and does noting for readability. Your options are, hide everything except usernames or scroll every comment and all replies. There’s no inbetween. IMO the ability to read and scroll top comments without the child comments would be a really nice feature.
I’m not sure why you’re telling me what you want but I think it works the way I would expect it to. The comment I long press collapses.
That’s cool it’s working as expected. This is a feature request thread, aka, a wish list. I was pointing out that the existing feature you mention is nice but not very helpful.
