The Commonwealth will contribute 50 per cent for administration costs and fully fund the destruction of surrendered weapons.

Why destroy perfectly good guns? Send them to Ukraine or something.

Leader Matt Canavan called the reforms a “knee-jerk and unnecessary piece of legislation that was never properly consulted on” as the rural party accused the government of unfairly targeting law-abiding gun owners.

People always forget about the rural communities, where guns are actually a necessary tool. There’s little practical need for one in your Sydney apartment; but these laws target everyone indiscriminately. Last time they tried to take the rural comminutes’ guns it didn’t go as planned, we’ll see what happens this time.

Uncle Gazza’s rusty old double barrel shotgun that’s a coin flip whether it fires or backfires; maybe not. But surely there’s something useful in the pile of weaponry? Pick out the cream of the crop and keep it somewhere until you decide what to do with it. Mulching them is a massive waste of resources.

Given the restrictions on guns already in place, and the intent of those restrictions was at limiting mass shootings like Port Arthur, I’m very doubtful it would yield many suitable rifles.

It would likely be more cost effective to simply buy suitable weapons for Ukraine and donate them.

Which I should note, the Australian government has already donated a lot of hardware to Ukraine. Including forcing the USA’s hand on the issue of donating our M1A1 tanks. 49 of them!
