And yet desktop vlc dev team is absolute garbage refusing to add basic features that many people been asking for years.

I believe it’s open source and considering their cross-platform focus I can imagine they’re a bit wary of adding functionality that might break on one of those or requires maintenance.

It’s possible to contribute though and seem to require an agreement before merging stuff.

If all else fails you could at least create a fork where you add that basic functionality.

Hurr durr default reply “open source do it yourself”. If the feature was requested over a decade ago with overwhelming support from users, if the feature is default behavior for many other opensource players, I can only blame dev team for being stubborn and not giving a fuck about users. When I attempted to switch to vlc I’ve encountered more than one example of this insanity - many old posts asking or reporting something with replies like 5, 6, 8 years later: “still not fixed”, “still no solution”.

Also, if you take a closer look at how it’s developed, it’s not your normal OPEN open source community, it’s a walled garden as much as it can be while still being open source. Devs aren’t focused on UX at all.

So why would I bother contributing to such project? There are better players, even if not cross-platform ones.
