Is the car market in Canada that bad right now? In 2021 I got my 2011 Nissan versa with around 60k miles for about 4k (USD). You just have to be willing to pass up some luxury features and find the right deal instead of buying from a dealership.

Thoven@lemdro.idto Technology@beehaw.org•The inarguable case for banning social media for teensEnglish12·3 months agoCalling people who are trying to protect children pure evil is unhelpful rhetoric. Disagreeing with their opinion is helpful. Sharing an anecdote against their proposals is helpful. Personal attacks are unhelpful and do more harm than good for the conversation. I will admit that they set the stage in bad faith by calling their stance ‘inarguable’.
Thoven@lemdro.idto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Linux help and actual pros and consEnglish13·3 months agoI’ve done a lot of this research recently. I’m out of town rn, but if you want to DM me sometime next week when I have access to my computer I’d be happy to put together a summary of my findings.
Everything starts as a luxury until the working class bands together and demands it. 40 hour workweeks, overtime, sick days. These are workplace examples, but the concept holds true everywhere. In a capitalist society things like privacy aren’t considered until someone starts exploiting them for profit, at which point people start to get serious about protecting it. And this rule applies 5x in any tech realm, as governments are notoriously slow to build legal protections in new and fast moving sectors.
All that was to address your title, which is only tangentially connected to the rest of your post. Regarding the body, companies have absolutely started to equate VPN with bad actors. Still worth having. I just whitelist the services I have to.
Evolve stage 2! Very fun and very unique game. Their battle pass monetization scheme fizzled out and they took down the servers. There may be some community run servers going, but getting onto them for a small player base that’s going to beat my ass just doesn’t seem worth.
I use the tiller extension in Google sheets. With the community savings budget template to allow for 0 based or “envelope” budgeting. One of the few things in my life so far ahead of every other option I couldn’t bring myself to ditch it and selfhost.

I converted an old laptop into a home theater PC. My friend bought spare components for cheap and built a desktop for the same purpose. Not for everyone, but a great solution for some use cases. And can potentially fill other roles, like being your jellyfin host.
While shopping I suggest you find a spreadsheet with the capabilities of every device you’re considering. A lot don’t support certain formats, which can limit the kind of files and content you can stream. Last I checked shield and the Google TV stick thing were trouncing the competition.
Thoven@lemdro.idOPto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Help fixing invalid origin with memosEnglish11·3 months agoDefinitely need remote access, and tunneling in every time I want to sync my notes app is way too much work. I’ve containerized these services as a security layer and you need user creds to access anything without an exploit. I’m comfortable with that level of risk.
Dynamic DNS is a very cool thing I didn’t know exists. I’ll definitely look into it further! But for the time being I still need a fix for my problem.
100% this. I’ve gotten to where when people try and rope me into their new million dollar app idea I tell them that there are fantastic resources online to teach yourself to do everything they need. I offer to help them find those resources and even help when they get stuck. I’ve probably done this dozens of times by now. No bites yet. All those millions wasted…

Thoven@lemdro.idOPto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Day One alternative? (FOSS preferred)English4·4 months agoThat’s where I found my current top contenders. Nothing had exactly what I’m looking for, which is why I turned here. It probably just doesn’t exist, but doesn’t hurt to ask.
As a W2 worker, as soon as I have all the tax documents I need. The longer you wait the more people get in line in front of you in processing, which can mean significant delays on your refund. If I were a business owner and owed taxes I’d wait as long as possible, so as to make the most use of the money I owe them.
Thoven@lemdro.idto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there any way I can realistically send a message to Donald Trump and have him read it?English4·5 months agoHe’s obsessed with his image, I would bet he spends significant time reading posts about himself on social media. Your best bet, without having a bunch of money to put towards the cause, is to post about him on truth social. However, any message of the nature of your example would be deleted before he had a chance to read it.
If you have some money but not Elon money, the suggestions from others are probably your best bet and less likely to get filtered out if negative. Billboard, swarm of social media bots, etc.
I use joplin with joplin server running through a reverse proxy in a docker container. I love it. It also supports encryption, so you could use a more convenient service like Google drive and still be assured of your privacy.
Thoven@lemdro.idto Technology@lemmy.world•The Ugly Truth About Spotify Is Finally RevealedEnglish4·7 months agoIts app on a specific platform? Or do you mean the entire service? Seems weird that they would sunset their only product.
Thoven@lemdro.idto Technology@lemmy.world•Spotify Wrapped 2024 controversy explained — what you need to knowEnglish8·7 months agoTidal has no official Linux app, which is shocking considering their demographic. But a hero has made an app that gets pretty close. Under the hood it’s the web client with some add-ons to support full quality streaming. The user experience is generally fairly close to an official app.
I used soundiiz to convert all my content over, and of probably over 10,000 songs there were less than 100 unavailable, so library isn’t a concern. The increased quality is nice, but the big reason I choose tidal is that instead of doing unnecessary stuff like podcasts they pay artists better. As much as 3X according to some things I’ve read. I have not verified those numbers.
Cards on the table: for Google money I’d do it too. If they want to enshittify their product until the competition has a fighting chance, who am I to stop them? Sure, it’s an annoying and anticonsumer thing to do. But making a “free” product’s bad qualities harder to circumvent isn’t the ethical hill I’m going to die on.
Getting this specific ad one too many times is actually what finally motivated my lazy ass to switch from sync to eternity
