The large scale replacement for oil is the original source of that energy, the sun. Sure it will take a while, but high technology (read small computers) doesn’t actually require hydrocarbons, it just requires knowledge of physics. Modern society is based on hydrocarbon fuels because they’re so convenient, but that doesn’t mean it’s required for any of our technology to function. We will likely be combusting hydrocarbons for the rest of our existence, they’re just too convenient for energy storage, but the source of those hydrocarbons could easily be specialized cyanobacteria farms or direct chemical synthesis. Both of those technologies already exist, but we have never done any significant investment in them because they would have to compete with basically picking up what’s already lying around. In the absence of significant oil deposits we will be forced to make those technologies work.

91·18 days agoThis is why, in any competent software dealing with physics in any way, it is always metric under the hood. Someone wants to see a quantity in some stupid freedom units? Fine sure convert it for them, but internally everything should be metric. Physics is hard enough, there’s no reason to make it worse with an inconsistent unit system with built in footguns somehow.
You either leave for a better offer, or stay long enough to see yourself become laid off.
I find it interesting how people consistently claim that art is purely subjective and all opinions on the quality or goodness of art are equally valid, but they only seem to do that when talking about art that is widely regarded as shit. One could speculate on the motivations of people making that claim, but maybe they just like shit.

11·25 days agoThere are no ethical billionaires. All of them got their wealth by exploiting people. The ones that seem like nice people still got there by causing untold harm to thousands or millions of people, and they continue to exploit people and personally benefit no matter what ideals they pay lipservice to.

science@lemmy.world•Mathematicians just found a hidden ‘reset button’ that can undo any rotationEnglish
8·26 days agoThis article is… difficult to critique. There’s too many things to refute so I’ll just undermine the title. We’ve known about an operation that can undo any rotation for a lot (hundreds?) of years. 3D rotations represented as quaternions or rotation matrices are trivially invertible, and their inverse literally undoes the rotation. For a rotation matrix the inverse is simply the transpose of the matrix, and for a quaternion it’s the complex conjugate (3 of the 4 numbers have their sign flipped). These operations have been used in computer algorithms likely for as long as we have had computers. Honestly this whole thing feels like a big fat nothing so I’m gonna stop letting it steal my time.
No women at the hospital huh?

Technology@lemmy.world•'Windmill': China tests world’s first megawatt-level airship to capture high windsEnglish
3·2 months agoUsing hot air instead of helium would not work. The density of hot air is much higher than helium, so you would need a significantly larger airship to lift the same mass of payload (the useful bits). That and keeping the air hot would require constant energy input reducing the efficiency of the system dramatically. I’m pretty sure that system would be literally impossible to construct.

I never understood softcore porn. They go to all the trouble of setting up emotional amd sexual tension just to waste it on a hammy holywood makeout scene where all you see is boobs and bush.
Guess I’m learning how to draw. I’ll make my own big dick futa waifu fuck my ideal big dick futa self.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Star Citizen fans sigh deeply, rub their foreheads as developer casts doubt on Squadron 42's 2026 release: 'I don't know if we're going to make it'English
12·2 months agoSince they started working on this game I’ve had time to go to university, graduate, decide to change careers, go back to university, graduate again, and literally help launch several successful aerospace vehicles. If it ever launches it won’t matter. The dream is dead and anything they release at this point can only be a disappointment. Such a shame.

Leopards Ate My Face@lemmy.world•People in this School District voted for Trump to get rid of the Department of Education. Now, they fear losing school funding. "Please don't take away our funding. We can't function without it"English
8·2 months agoI mean yeah but I’m kind of getting sick of the leopards eating people’s faces. It was kind of cathartic at first because of the irony but it’s still leopards eating people’s faces. Sooner or later it’s going to be my face and I voted for no leopards eating anyone’s face let alone mine.
It’s a temporary short term solution that is repeatable. If my time working under capitalism has taught me anything it’s that a temporary short term solution works perfectly well as a long term solution if you accept it as maintenance. Just gotta clear out the cunts every once in a while.
Actually we don’t get cubicles anymore since everyone went with open office plans.
Except when you want to customize it to stop it from updating against your will. Then fuck you, secret code to change your settings and settings that simply do nothing.

31·5 months agoIt baffles me that medical device manufacturers use windows for fucking anything. You’d think just the licensing cost would push them away, but it being hot garbage for embedded software should have been enough. It’s amazing any medical device certification process would allow them to use it at all, with the notorious unreliability and not giving a shit what you think about updates. People could die because of a fucking windows update at the wrong time.

Try and stop me. I don’t even have windows installed anymore.

You may not know this but oil comes from cyanobacteria or algae blooming, dieing, and falling to the bottom of ancient lakes. We can farm them better than they could ever grow on their own in nature, just like we do with corn, rice, wheat, and a hundred other crops. The only complex part would be the scale required. We have the technology to industrialize hydrocarbon production that way today. Life isn’t magic, so there’s no reason we couldn’t do direct synthesis with more controlled processes. And yeah it’s going to require resources. Everything does. It’s just pretty fatalistic to think we won’t be able to bootstrap ourselves up to current technologies without oil when we’ve already done it once before. Oil just makes scale possible, not the technology itself.
