Absolutely. I hate Ubuntu now, but Karmic Koala was my gateway drug. I was scared of partitioning so wubi meant I could still try it out.

Then Unity happened and I no longer cared for Ubuntu.

Debian can be annoying if you want to install a newish version of something from the package manager. It’s why I can’t use APT to keep Rust up to date and have to use Rustup instead, for an example.

Commercial ones would work I think, but viewing angles can be off on at least outdoor models.

Specs wise, LG still makes some of the best TVs. You want 4k 120Hz, they’ve got you. But if you feel morally unable to support a company that has opt-out tracking like this, you’re a bit more limited. I thought maybe Sony’s better, but nope. There’s instructions on how to disable ACR on their TVs too. Philips comes with Roku or Google TV, both of which snoop on you, but I don’t know if they do the automatic content recognition thing.

Dumb TVs exist, but good luck finding one with a decent resolution AND price.

But even then, is the water truly consumed? Does it get contaminated with something like the cooling water of a nuclear power plant? Or does the water just get warm and then either be pumped into a water body somewhere or ideally reused to heat homes?

There’s loads of problems with the energy consumption of AI, but I don’t think the water consumption is such a huge problem? Hopefully, anyway.

If tracking being off by default was the issue, the share of Firefox users should be consistently under 1% because who even turns on tracking?

The reality is, nobody outside of tech circles uses it anymore. Hell, a lot of devs even prefer to not support Firefox if they want to do something non-standard that Chromium allows and Firefox doesn’t.

Safari sucks but it has actual usage numbers and is currently the only reason not to put a big ass “this site only runs on Chromium” error on a lot of websites.

The Safari-Chromium illusion of choice might be a better deal for iOS users but that would still be only 2 browsers to choose from. Mozilla ain’t gonna invest in anything that isn’t AI or advertising. Firefox on iOS is a pipe dream.

Here is my two cents: The author mentioned you can’t have a social app without push notifications: I hate the idea that everything should be able to grab my attention. Though obviously the support is needed.

But also, Safari is the last browser stopping Google from total market dominance. Firefox is irrelevant. And this is coming from a Firefox user who remembers when 2.0 came out…

I’m in Europe, but at least in my country, it’s not ubiquitous. Some parts of some cities have it.

However I was thinking in the context that mixed purpose buildings are cool. Would I prefer a locally owned shop? Hell yeah. But it’s also cool to at least have SOMETHING available so close.

Nearest cafe and shop are both over a kilometer away from me. I wish there was a corner shop 200 meters away and a bar 100 meters away like at my old apartment. But the part of the city I live in is entirely residential.

I mean the Starbucks is fine. If you’re into it, it’s great to have it nearby. And if it’s not your thing, maybe the building next door has something that isn’t so anti-worker. The short term rentals are indeed a menace though.

Man I live in a country with socialized healthcare and we don’t get dental either. Or vision.

There are private insurance providers who offer both. But they ONLY offer services to employers and I’ve never had a company offer such a benefit. Because you don’t need luxury bones to work and any employer who makes you work with a screen is already forced to cover up to some sum every year or every few years (I don’t remember) spent on glasses. And there’s little point in all the other coverage because it’s already free.
