  • That’s the face I’ve made just yesterday when my friend told me she’s now eligible for a subsidized IT mortgage. That thing was one of Russia’s last ditch attempts at stopping skilled workers from fucking off to different countries. The problem is, she’s a web designer. I guess that counts as IT nowadays, so good for her. But it’s bitter to hear as sr. backend tech who never hit the criteria…

  • Nope. I’ve had a script with almost 100 regex’s that automatically blacklisted around 200 people every time I opened Twitter. Two years in and upwards of 300.000 accounts in the blacklist, I realized that it didn’t even make a dent in dealing with all of the spam I was seeing, and just deleted my account. Best decision ever. I advice you too, to try it out.

  • I really don’t understand people that prefer Google over Mozilla. Firefox works like a charm and Google already knows enough about us IMHO.

Firefox objectively has poor responsiveness in some apps, hence why some “works only in chrome” banners are justified. Can’t quite put my finger of it, but it got a lot worse somewhere between quantum and heartbleed(but not because of it, I checked), and it never recovered. In my own projects that were time-sensitive, like 3d games and music apps, I couldn’t find the source of it, but found that while some approaches led to major performance hit on firefox, others majorly hit chromium, and vice versa, and it was all about juggling to finding an approach that doesn’t hit either as hard. But in some cases there were none and so I had to choose. Obviously the browser engine with a higher market share wins. And because of that, to be on par with Chrome, Firefox not only has to be better, it has to be not worse in all cases, which is a rather tough challenge.

I wouldn’t jump on to blame on the customer. In fact, have my own hill I’m fighting right now where I’m not completely in the right. Who knows, maybe the working hours were not visible, or maybe there was no closed sign at all. In any case, this made at least one person mad and is a perfect opportunity for a business to do a retro and check if they might need to do something about it. It’s much more valuable than a thousandth review from someone who had a great time… or didn’t, but didn’t care to review either. And, unless your business is genuinely bad, even a Karen once in a while shouldn’t affect the total score a bit.

  • I think it’s possible to have both in a federated system. Let the instance the user is on keep the tally of who upvoted what, and let the instance the post is on to know only the tally from other instances. Should be up to instances whether to show this data to users or not. This way it’d be easy to find and defederate single user instances manipulating votes.

But, on the other hand, I don’t see a reason to care about privacy of votes if you can’t even delete a post or comment. Fediverse is, by design, not very private, why bother with just this one aspect of it then.

I ain’t no physicist, but the last time I’ve checked, it was a theory galore, with theories upon theories about whether there could even exist a single definite theory of everything, with stuff not being observable by it’s nature (quantum particles), other stuff not being observable by it’s nature (beyond observable universe), and theories based upon the event of literal creation of the universe itself, which is in turn theorized by linearly extrapolating a single phenomenon all the way down to zero (correct me if I’m wrong on this one, shit’s fascinating).

Finding how dinosaurs sounded like, on the other hand, doesn’t take much theorizing - just take some well preserved remains, approximate breathing cavities structure and model it with something like a pink trombone. I’m oversimplifying, of course, but, the point is, it’s miles closer to us, time and space wise, than whatever physicists are rambling about.
