Selfhosted@lemmy.world•People who are staying on Plex, have you tried Jellyfin? What about it do you not prefer? (real question)English
7·3 days agoSecurely sharing is simpler on Plex. I can invite anyone with just an email and they have near instant access to an HTTPS encrypted service. I don’t have to deal with setting up a VPN, reverse proxy or ACLs (in the case of something like Tailscale).

82·6 days agoBecause if I’m watching locally I dont need them, and if I’m watching remotely Plex already offers secure remote viewing 'out of the box`. They give every user an SSL certificate and a public accessible URL at app.plex.tv. They also handle secure user authentication. The new price is stupid, but Jellyfin is not a 1:1 replacement.

52·6 days agoA gentle reminder that Jellyin more or less requires you to set up a reverse proxy and a secure VPN to use it outside of your home.
Yeah I really hate this post, and how often it seems to surface on lemmy. Agrivoltaics is good for energy and for the plants*!
*Some exclusions apply. Not all plants grow better with the added shade.

From the context it is clear what you mean.

1·12 days agokek. okay tell that to all the electric vehicle owners who’ve burned to death in random car fires cause by their batteries igniting themselves. also maybe educate yourself a little and read the underwriters lab article I posted.

3·11 days agoThey do, but It’s sort of like what happens when you take a hot steak off the pan. The extrernal heat source is removed, but the steak has enough internal heat to continue cooking for a bit while it rests. Your laptop might shut down, but the whole thing being in a backpack would act as an insulator and allow it to continue heating.

5·12 days agoI was thinking more about the batteries. It’s probably not as big of a deal with such small batteries, but lithium ion batts can enter an “uncontrollable, self-heating state” called thermal runaway. https://ul.org/research-updates/what-is-thermal-runaway/

4·14 days agoI agree, it’s looking fantastic so far. Dual-stick controls is so much nicer than the weird c-stick for first person thing. BTW do you know if there’s a way to get the shader version of the texture pack working? I assume there isn’t but thought I’d ask.
Thank you for the high quality sources. Cleveland Clinic has been recommended to me multiple times by health care providers.

science@lemmy.world•PBS. Even YT revenue is revenue.English
2·18 days agoIt’s the exposure, which leads to more ad revenue (in theory, without adblockers). YouTube creators live or die based on the algorithm and two of the main things the algorithm looks at is frequency of posting and engagement. Since Google needs metrics to give advertisers some idea of revenue potential, someone liking your video isn’t nearly as valuable to the algorithm as someone liking, commenting and subscribing (if not already subscribed obvi). As an example, ElectroBOOM just started making shorts of all his old content because he’s in the middle of a big house move and doesnt have time to make regular content which he noticed led the algo to stop recommending his content as much. But as far as just making a junk account and liking every video Google has systems in place to ignore “stale” accounts that don’t actually watch the videos. Ultimately what they want is viewers since eyeballs equals ads equals revenue and everything else is just a way of predicting future views.
Do the individual photons slow down? No. But those photons get absorbed by atoms along the way and then a new photon of light is emitted (nearly, but not literally, instantly) which then continues along it’s merry way at C until it encounters another atom. What slows down is the net speed of transport through a given medium.

The extent of the setup for Plex is to log in with your email and password, pick which shared libraries you want to be pinned to your home screen, and then browse. My parents in their 70s were able to figure it out and all I had to do from my end was grant them access to the libraries I wanted to share with a simple check box.
