It’s mostly awful for the first two badges, but playing with fast forward I beat my first badge in White 2 with in game time around 65 hours (so probably around 15 hours). It’s insanely tedious, but I enjoy it late game.

Beg to differ on the Pokemon example, but then again I am a completionist so that type of challenge gives me lots of self satisfaction (plus now I have achievements through RetroAchevements so a little bragging rights). Frankly, things like that should have internal motivation, so literally no reward is fine by me. I’m literally doing a professor oak challenge right now, which is significantly worse, lol.

Where I draw the line is mostly challenges that I just don’t see myself being able to accomplish in a given lifetime. Like the Balatro golden chip on every joker is way too RNG and time consuming for me. I also generally prefer not to have to do a speed run, but that’s mostly because I have kids now and setting something down without worrying about time is ideal.

I was a little surprised that AI was actually not too off, or at least when it was, it was because it misunderstood the distro I used. I don’t think it’s a good idea to go beyond basics though, like installing random stuff from the AUR to fix something can go horribly wrong.

I’ve been using rEFInd for my dual boot and it shows a Tux, but that’s mostly cause I haven’t been tinkering with it. Now I’m tempted to use anime girl personifications of OSs instead, which would be really classy, I bet.

This has been around for a long time, before Netflix. My dad and much of his generation get lonely when the TV is off, so he leaves it on at all times on whatever, while working or watching sports. Network TV does this with predictable crime dramas and sitcoms, cables got Hallmark movies and reruns of family guy, etc. Half-tune is a popular format for pretty much most age groups.

I explicitly don’t do this, but I do have podcasts for my second screen in a sense-- only I won’t do them unless it’s a grindy game or Minecraft or something, and usually the podcast is taking my cognitive attention. It’s disruptive if it’s a thoughtful activity, like scrolling social media (though I guess the fediverse is a little more engaging than slopbook or whatever).

Volume mute. Family members schedule memorized. Escape route established. Contingency windows tab ready after alt F4. Several alibis established. Elaborate excuses on the ready. Disguises and new identity ready in case my position is compromised.

I’ve done the math for my area. $200 at Trader Joe’s covers family of four for about 7 to 10 days, breakfast, snacks, dinner and coffee. Lunch is usually leftovers. Even eating cheaply at my local Vietnamese place is like $8 a meal, and while the kids can split a pho, that’s still over $30 after tax and tip. And that’s cheapest - other places easily hit over $80 per meal.

Just tonight we made pesto pasta with chicken sausage and portabella mushrooms. $1 pasta, $3 sauce (or make your own, basil is about that price), $3 mushrooms, $4 sausage. Kids love it, cooks very easy, and saves well. It’s not the healthiest, but they had apples earlier so it wasn’t all bad.

Even if it’s just for one, all the ingredients can be halved and saved for a while, unless you love leftovers (and I do love leftovers). Just always prioritize breads asap, and freeze meats you don’t use unless they’re preserved like sausage. Frozen veggies are much easier to work with, too. Easy money.

That’s what I figured and I appreciate the confirmation. Since I work in education it’s probably a “better safe than sorry” approach since the laws on student privacy are actually enforced, unlike in corporate. (Obviously it’s security theater, though, as web apps and Windows integration make emails and files easy to steal anyway).

Yup. Although I’ve become a fan of things like GIMP, you do need to learn a new software and depending on who you are, it might take a while. Lucky (?) for me, I was too poor to afford it for school and since it was for official assignments, I didn’t want to pirate.

That said, Microsoft integration is more a curse than a blessing at this point. Privacy and junk aside, it’s dumped hundreds of GB of files onto my tiny SSD C: since it kept changing settings and ignoring my preferences. That’s why Microsoft messing things up is converting people who even prefer integration, when there’s an option to anyway!

Some of y’all are showing your bubble side; outside of our communities here, Linux very much is obscure. That said, there really does seem to be a leak in the mainstream and it’s nice to see it mentioned in a publication. Even if just a little gain, thanks in large part to Steam raising awareness for gamers, US decline in Europe and Canada, and Windows 11 blunders with security.

I’ve gone from people being completely oblivious when I mention Linux, to going “oh, like steam deck?” but there’s still plenty of others who still are oblivious. Then again, mentioning file extensions goes over the heads of 95% of who I talk to, so I wouldn’t have too high hopes.

Probably for the best, lol. At the very least, Roblox isn’t particularly good for kids.

Also, modded Minecraft through Prism beats bedrock any day of the week. I’m hoping when my kids are of age, they’ll be down for an expert pack. My daughter sure as hell will be, she’s as weird as I am. I’m sure more normal kids have packs they’d enjoy, though.

Yeah, I think if it’s web apps it’s fine, just aren’t ideal. I was mostly frustrated I couldn’t use a third party email app or OneDrive integration app. It’s more a grievance with the university I work for, though.

Already hit a difficulty since my workplace uses Microsoft for everything and the admins lock out third party stuff. I guess I can access files on outlook and OneDrive via browser based options but God they’re awful.

I guess we just need more global pandemics. It’s a great boom to the video game industry, literally everyone was playing games when AC:NH released.

Would take me a while to dig up, it was from a few years ago. If you want, try searching something like “interview and job performance” into a research search database (Google scholar is usually an easy one to use). Trying it myself, first hit is a meta analysis with a good amount of citations. (But I’m not going to read anything right now, my kids are waking up lol).

That said, it’ll favor papers with statistically significant findings, so non findings get lost to the file cabinet problem.

Edit: I lied, curiosity got the better of me so while my kids were eating breakfast I glanced at the results of the meta analysis which gives a few corrections. Tldr, impression management, physical attraction, having non verbal things interview look at, etc, are ok predictors of interview ratings but weak with job performance. Doesn’t seem concerned with actual skills, but I think that’s better covered by what they’re referencing in their literature review.

I agree. Can’t quite put my finger on it… maybe the window behind the monitor? I try not to assume simply because of the style, but the lack of author credit makes it hard to check anyway.The weird thing is it wouldn’t at all be hard to draw by hand.
