Tinned fish/preserved seafood enjoyers of this thread, what’s your favourite place (not colesworth) to get the goods?

Editing this just to elaborate on my request. I’m mostly looking for fancy stuff like Ortiz, Jose Gourmet, Little Tin Co.

The Aldi smoked rainbow trout fillets are very nice. I’m not so fond of the truffle oil infused trout fillets, but the plain ones are lovely. I like their plain sardines in oil but these sell out fast. I don’t like the sardies with horrid gloopy sauces that Aldi sells. If I want a gloopy sauce, I’ll make it myself.

Preston market fishmongers have nice smoked cod fillets (not entirely sure it’s really cod but definitely smoked) and I use these quite a lot. I would assume Vic market likewise would have a good range.

Most mediterranean grocers have baccala which is basically baconised white fish. Needs to be soaked to remove excessive salt but once soaked is nice in stirfries and fish pies etc. and just magic in an omelette or a rich tomato/garlic based fish stew (bouillabaise). Nice for pizza topping too.

I do get colesworth plain sardines in oil when I can’t find any at Aldi - they are the cheapest. Also colesworth can be relied on for tinned crab meat (when I can’t be bothered sourcing, cooking and picking fresh crab).

Most IGAs have John West stuff, including kippers, and sometimes other brands. Prices are higher but there’s usually a good range.

NQR occasionally has tinned fish both plain and fancy and this is a good source for stocking up the larder when they have stock in.

If stocking up, I’d start with NQR, and then Preston market, and then Aldi, and then IGA and then, and only then, colesworth.

Thanks for the rec. Probably should’ve worded my post better, was more looking for fancy schmancy stuff.

I’m making up a little gift for someone.

Noice! Myer used to sell cute little tins of WA sardies packed with a sprig of lemon myrtle in the tin - super delicious. Maybe Myer or DJs have something similar in their gormet food hall.

Getting the fancy stuff in Australia is tough, and costs far too much. You really need to order online honestly. You can go to various markets and most will have a spot to buy from, but yeh you’ll pay too much 🤷‍♂️

I gotta head into Richmond in a couple hours to get the car, then drive to the corner of the city near the Royal Melbourne to pick everyone up around 4pm, then hightail it out to the 'Rat.

Google Maps keeps directing me to the hellish Westgate and the inevitable shitshow with the newly flipped m80 intersection. Would it not be easier to take Ballarat Rd, or even Dynon Rd -> Princes Hwy? 🤔

    How appetising does that look?

Don’t worry. I made it pretty

Verdict: Well… you know when you go to a take away or f & c shop and you order the chicken roll because it looks good on the board and you receive something in a plastic sleeve and you go “that’s not fresh!” Yeah it’s like that. Not good. Not bad. Just meh.

Would I get it again? Maybe if it was on the spesh.

Ok I had to post this here after seeing it on the other site. For anyone who has wondered how they do the VFX for live sports broadcasts - ads on the field that seem to follow the camera around perfectly, on-screen graphics following players around, calculation of ball trajectories - this is a fantastic 11 minute video. You gotta check it out, I don’t even care for sports and was mesmerised!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkWWcjeL_zM

Tech is wild though. I cannot believe they managed to render an entire NHL game into Toy Story settings/characters - including the freaking commentators - LIVE, with only TWENTY seconds delay from the live broadcast.

Interesting. The reason I give him dry in the morning is because it’s easier on the eyes and nose but if adding water means he enjoys it more I will just have to suck that up.

Word of caution: That can allow bacteria and mould on the surface of the kibble to grow so either make sure it’s eaten immediately and remove the food if it isn’t, or try to avoid soaking.

I’m SO sick of this Taylor Swift talk. Nothing against her, I like some of her stuff. But this “will she become president” and “OMG she’s landed in Melbourne” is just so tedious. You know who else is here? The Blink 182 boys! But there’s no need to bang on about it. Do people really not have anything else to talk about?

I’m more interested in hearing peoples thoughts on a their last coffee than I am their thoughts on a celebrity.

Taylor Swift will now talk about Melbourne’s coffee.

If she gets some places to lift their game I’m all for it.

Thats gotta be the worst thing about touring. Do you send an advanced scout to check out good coffee places for you? Or do you just take a punt each time you go to a new city.

From my experiences finding coffee in the USA, she’ll love Melbourne. Honestly, the calibre of the coffee there is appalling.

My last coffee was about 4 hours ago. Large cappuccino, extra strong, lite milk, no sugar. I didn’t have to wait for a machine because there’s TWO there. Paid by card. Anything else you want to know?

I expect it’s because you’re in the same city she’s in. The level of Taylor Swift noise in Perth is quite manageable. We know she’s in Australia, and we know she’s not coming to Perth. There’s probably more noise about Pink who is coming to town in a couple of weeks.

We’re all about the heat in Perth. I think yesterday was our 5th >40° degree day for February. Sunday is forecast to be our 6th.
No humidity to speak of, at least.

What’s the difference between the hype of U2 OR Madonna touring back in the day, or even the Beatles or the Stones. Just a modern take.

It comes to taste probably. The artists you listed were quite unique and groundbreaking for their time. TS is a run of the mill pop singer that’s not really different in a sea of other pop stars.

theres nothing wrong with pop per say. i mean I certainly dont understand todays pop, but if you go fish out my ipod that hasnt been updated in 10 years I’m prepared to bet it has tons of 90’s-00’s pop. It just feels a lot like you know how little kids can ONLY talk about the thing they love and are so excited about? That, but with teenagers/20 somethings it becomes a bit more tedious. I’m not hear to shame other peoples interests, theres a special place in hell for folks who do that. But I also don’t run around pretending I’m captain of the enterprise or telling everyone how Dune Pt1 was a cinematic masterpiece either.

When WrestleMania came to Toronto in the early 90s and the main event was Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate warrior, it was front page news in all the papers.

The hype leading up to it lasted months. Even people that didn’t care for wrestling knew of it.

This swift thing feels the same.
