Am I allowed to throw my hat in the ring? I’m definitely No expert and I’m constantly learning, but I have vods of my live streams, gaming and tech, and I’m running Fireside Fedi a show about talking with different folks around the Fediverse. Let me know if I can post the link. I don’t want to self promote of that’s not what folks are looking for here.
Aldo I would say that we’re still very early in the Fediverse life cycle. Majority of these folks aren’t paid or are a shoestring budget and solo with tiny teams. So if we want to see this experiment survive we have to do more than what we’ve done in the past.
Talk to content creators you enjoy. Let them know you’d like to see their content on the Fediverse. Especially if you’re a patreon member. Create content yourself. The Fediverse will succeed or fail based on our actions.
The internet wasn’t born in a day and a LOT of projects failed, because everyone took the easy centralized way. This time we have to fight for it to remove their claws.
I’ve talked to friends that were very excited Trump won. Recently tried having an open conversation with someone that left my community afterwards over the conversations because I didn’t come to his side.
They just believe it’ll be better. What better? They don’t know. They can’t verbalize, because they’re told it’s terrible now and will be better.
They believe Trump isn’t a criminal, didn’t incite violence on Jan 6, the woke people are out to get them, etc. I’ve literally asked people to define “woke” for me when they use it that way. They can’t. They don’t know. They’re not bad people, they’re brainwashed at this point.
I hope. :-D. I’m no Dev, but I enjoy talking to people and I really believe In the Fediverse so just trying to contribute anyway I can to make it a more welcoming and interesting place.
Calling it Fireside Fedi, where I just talk to folks around the Fediverse and get to know them. I have Gabe Kangas first tomorrow. He’s the lead Dev of Owncast. Created a community !firesidefedi@lemmy.world if you’re interested. Fully Fedi powered. Livestream, Voss, socials, eventually setting up Fedi audio player as well.
Edit: fixed link to community
It gives me hope. We have an opportunity to level the playing field. So much hope that I’m actually starting a show to try to help folks get to know people behind the Fediverse! I truly believe in it and hope we can claw back the internet from the tech giants.
Excellent Point. If that’s the case though, then wouldn’t other countries follow suit which still limits big tech’s reach and makes them less profitable and less powerful? Idk. Guess we’ll see how it plays out. Either way, I’m staying as far from those ecosystems as possible to at least try to mitigate some of what they do. I’ll never be totally successful, genie is put of the bottle, but we can at least attempt.
Chinese company does what American companies have done for 25+ years now!
Is it time for REAL data privacy laws or are we just gonna keep playing whack-a-mole with Chinese tech companies that get us nowhere?
I’m on Debian 12 and I run the flatpak. If it breaks I just install Steam on the desktop until it’s fixed. So they don’t have to be mutually exclusive. But I haven’t had to worry about the flatpak breaking in years.
Containerize everything!
Crypto everything!
NFT everything!
Metaverse everything!
This too shall pass.
Assembly is the only REAL gaming language! Look at Roller Coaster Tycoon!
I don’t have a younger sister I have to share clothes with.
I’d enjoy and update log personally.
None. Don’t connect it to the internet. Get a PC and use the TV as a glorified monitor.
First off, yes, the title of the post is misleading. Mozilla is creating a privacy focused ad system. However, I legit don’t get who this is for.
As a user, I’m not turning off my adblockers. Yes, privacy is important. I’m ok with some ads, but I’m not going to risk my privacy and security, because it’s not like I’ll have a clue who is backing said ads. So it’s not for me.
Normal users have shown that they really don’t care, let alone have any kind of clue what’s going on. So it’s not for them.
Advertisers have huge incentive to show you targeted ads. They don’t want to show someone an ad on the other side of the planet for something they don’t have access to. Also why would they want to show you an ad for something completely unrelated. What’s the incentive for them to give up their targeted ads?
It’s not like Mozilla is poising themselves for any kind of government oversight. I’m in the US, and the US gov doesn’t seem to give a shit. And the EU, while they have GDPR and they’re fining companies left and right, it doesn’t seem like they’re really targeting these kinds of ads. Outside of those two I don’t know anything about other countries honestly.
So again, I have zero clue who this is for or why Mozilla thinks this will be successful. There’s no incentive or knowledge that this is needed.
I use Firefox. I run Linux. I’m not trying to bash Mozilla here. I’m not trying to be a naysayer. I’m just trying to understand what kind of real world use case this solves and incentivizes users and advertises to use it over the alternatives.
While I don’t know Japanese law, and folks are right in US law about prior art, I think everyone is missing the point.
Companies like Nintendo don’t have to actually win. They probably created this patent as a throw away to force Pocketpair to waste money fighting it. It costs tons of money to hire an attorney, work through the process, etc. It takes YEARS.
Nintendo probably wants to waste Pocketpair’s time and money OR they’re trying to get them to just settle and give Nintendo a cut of the profits.
That’s how big tech works with tons of patents and how patent trolls keep leeching off society. I have a patent for a button, you have a phone you’re making. I say give me 1% of your profit. What’s 1% to you? You agree, we don’t go to court and the next person that does it I do the same thing, but now I show them how many people agreed and that person is scared and think I have a legit case.
This shit is constantly happening in the background nonstop.
Patent law, copyright law, they are fundamentally broken. But they won’t get fixed until something BIG happens.
Nintendo is and always has been a bully. This is just another instance of it.
It was a live stream I was doing with Owncast. Definitely enjoying it. Thank you!
Pretty sure Squenix’s expectations for any game is $1 trilliondy-biliondy-milliondy dollars.
Here’s a thought … CHANGE YOUR EXPECTATIONS!
