A cat I lived with named Ninja a long hair tortie would only play with the laser when she wanted to as in when she wanted to chase the dot around.
She always knew it was me whenever I shined it and would legit look at me in bewilideriment when I pointed it or would come over to bite it out of my hand and play with the laser pointer itself.
Same goes for an orange cat I rescued named pirate.
Both cats loved taking baths as well and would legit wait for me to bathe them sometimes.
Especially pirate. Though to be honest one of the first things I did was wash him when I rescued him and Ninja was also a rescue cat.
Obligatory don’t play with cats using just lasers. The fact that they can’t actual catch the thing causes anxiety. You should complete play with something like a string toy, something they can actually grab and attack to complete the hunt.
I like to have a treat and point the laser on the treat so they catch their prey.

I had a cat who knew what was up. She would always look at me, then at the laser pointer, then where the dot would appear.
It was like she was making sure I knew that she knew.
We also have a new kitten who loves chasing toys but hates catching them.
This is what my cat does. Whenever she hears me pick up the laser (it rattles a bit) she starts chittering and looks at me until she looks around for the laser. She’ll chase it for a bit before growing too frustrated. I only bring it out on super rare occasions, like every few months.
Mine wouldn’t ever get frustrated at it, just bored after a bit. I think she just liked the chase and didn’t care about actually catching anything.
Solid advice, but also note that not all cats are the same - three of my four see the laser as “cat video games.”
They fully demonstrate understanding and get antsy when I stop the laser to pull out a different toy. They do play together and play with other toys on their own, though. It’s just with me they’re laser focused.
I don’t use lasers often, but when I do I end with them getting a treat to help complete the hunt. It leaves them with a reward for “catching” the laser
